Because they are that tuned in to Cal sports? They probably just read all the usual lazy lists done by lazy bay area sports reporters.

Heard discouraging recruiting issue regarding howland today. Basically he's killed all his LA connections (i.e. aau) b/c of recruiting over players and breaking his word--something to that effect. Makes some sense considering the roster this year: Anderson from jersey, Adams from GA, Parker from south (?), Powell from SD, LaVine from WA etc.

So if recruiting in state is important, Howland may not be the best candidate.

Howland has zero people skills and that is a big part of why he is out of job. And he's dead in California recruiting circles.

Also, in any other year, we would be over the moon if we got a coach with 3 straight Final Fours.

Sandy is going to the Final Four to interview some has been coaches and some that are under qualified and she will sign the cheapest one.

or graduating players for that matter, Howland may not be the best candidate. Voted by a confidential SI poll of coaches to run the dirtiest program a few years back. Just what Cal doesn't need.

If that SI article about Howland that came out a couple of years ago had any credibility, NO WAY we would hire him. It is for this reason that I am surprised that Crumpacker has mentioned Howland each of the past two days as a possible successor.

Of course, I shouldn't be surprised, considering the source, should I?

Not defending Howland but I think that article has been subject to a LOT of retractions/libel allegations. The more worrisom sign is that there are whispers that he is dead to the AAU crowd.

"We" can be "alive" with the AAU crowd with the right hire.

Howland would absolutely be the wrong hire. Other than maybe Braun, the only hire that would **** me off.

If we are looking for UCLA cast-offs I'd MUCH rather have Lavin.

To me, the article is just as much about a bunch of out of control players in an environment where everything was available to them as it was about a coach who shouldn't have recruited them and couldn't control them once he did. To me, the lesson there is as much about knowing yourself and your limitations (i.e., recruit your kind of guy, not the kind of guy that the people who run the UCLA program tell you you have to get) as it is about mismanaging the situation.

There's no doubt that if Howland gets interviewed, it would be very important to do your own background check of his time there with people you trust as opposed to the sources of this article (which were all a bunch of disgruntled players who never went on to do anything of importance aside from Jrue Holiday who was gone so quickly that he really doesn't count much). A more realistic appraisal of him is probably the depiction of him when UCLA was winning with guys that were more his kind of guys - guys who knew when it was time to stop partying and get down to business. And you'd also need to feel very confident that he learned from his experience and grew from it.

It's also important to note that a guy like Howland wouldn't even be available to a place like Cal if he didn't have some warts. You have to understand that the Chris Petersen football equivalents for basketball that get mentioned every time there is a coaching search in basketball (Mark Few, Shaka Smart) are not coming here and there's no point hoping they are. If we could get someone better than Howland who personified all of Travis DeCuire's best qualities, only he had also shown he could build tournament teams and win tournament games, that would be great. I just don't have a lot of faith in Sandy's ability to attract and sign such a guy.

For all his issues, Howland is a good coach. Wouldn't be my first pick, but he's a better option than any of our assistants.

I laugh at all the comments about Howland's LA recruiting issues. Yah, like Monty killed it on the recruiting trail in LA.
