From Twitter: RT @tnoieNDInsider: Source: Among head coaches that #Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour wants to speak with is #NotreDame coach Mike Brey

I certainly hope this doesn't go far. ND had a losing record in their first year in the ACC (although some decent wins against Duke and Clemson). I suppose this also means that the dream candidates aren't jumping to come to Cal.

Same deal with Bob Diaco for the opening last year after Tedford left, Sandy likes mining her former Notre Dame connections, and Mike Brey would be very disappointing.

No No No. Not what the program needs at all. If he is seriously under consideration then SB clearly is happy with the prospect of being an annual bubble type team. He has had some occasional good teams, but mostly just slightly above average teams that pull an upset or two but lose too often to lesser teams. In other words, just like the current Cal program.

Please, no re-threads. And sorry but this would be a lazy hire. Brey is a place holder or conservative hire. Give the job to a young hungry guy who wants to build a program. Travis D looks better and better when guys like this are mentioned. Cal needs to get a guy who can recruit in California and the West Coast. Cal at this point doesn't have a national profile like ND, so I can't imagine he'd pull in decent players nationally.

I actually think this would be a very solid hire for Cal. Brey is a very good coach. Could do a lot worse.

Maybe that's her plan. That way everyone is relieved when TD gets hired.

Yes young and hungry like USC's hire of Enfield last year. How's that working out for them? With his record from last season he might be available to CAL!

If rumors like this and that she sent folks to meet with Few are true, I'm starting to think Sandy has some back room connections to the search firm people. That's the only thing I can think of. Should be a nice bill. Unless of course she actually has support to outbid schools for established coaches. . Aggressive hires aren't really our thing if we're being honest.

I know people will say that she has to at least try, but unless we're going to outbid and pay big bucks for a new coach, does she really? Which is very different than say UCLA throwing damn near 4 million at Peterson and getting turned down. There's a difference between actually trying i.e playing the game, and just throwing out an offer.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......

Mike Brey is mediocrity defined. Solid coach, but nothing more. If we want to be average and continue to be irrelevant, then he's the way to go.

Sandy is showing she's a putz.

mediocre. we need someone who can recruit on the west coast. give me td. sandy has no clue.

Mike Brey is boring and mediocre. As prior posters have mentioned, we need someone young, energetic, and who will recruit aggressively.

Goodness, I don't like the feel of this. Sandy's just basically looking toward her connections in this coaching search. What's the point of hiring the search firm then?

That the search firm flew up to meet with him.

Realistically I don't think this is a bad hire, it's just more of the same.

This thread is pretty funny.

Mike Brey would be a pretty solid hire. Not inspiring, but he's had a good run at a strong football school with similar academic constraints that he'd face at Cal. He took over a pretty bad program and has won 20, 22, 24, 19, 17, 16, 24, 25, 21, 23, 27, 22, and 25 games, with no losing seasons, before he went 15-17 this year (6-12 in ND's first year in the ACC). He also made the tourney 9 of 13 years, winning 6 games (with one Sweet 16 appearance).

Again, not the most exciting hire, but he's a very good coach who has had a lot of success. And, again, we are not getting a guy like Shaka Smart.

We have no idea how it's working out yet. These things take time. The roster he inherited is completely unsuited to his style of play. We'll find out in a couple years how it's working out.

"Could do worse" shouldn't be the relevant criterion. We want excellence.

It shows lack of vision. It shows that the status quo is fine. It is just killing time rather than planning for the future.

No. Bold, not boring is the way we need to go.
I want hungry for greatness. I want SCT to be happy with Cal sports.

The money it would take to buy a guy like Brey out of his Notre Dame contract makes it a very bad risk with little upside. We would be overpaying for meh again.

If Cal can't land a homerun candidate that will generate excitement, I'd much rather Cal roll the dice with TD or Gates, little money at risk with bigger upside potential.

Yup. If you try and fail to sign a star coach, then see if you can identify a star-in-the-making. Hiring someone predictably safe won't get you to the mountaintop.

Exactly. It would be such an uninspiring hire. He's going to cost more than what he'll be able to do for our program. This is not going to put people in the seats at Haas.

Is this really so bad? The guy has a solid track record at an academically inclined school that plays in a tough conference. I'm not saying I love it but this is fundamentally an anti-Dykes profile, so I like it at least a little.

Maybe, but there is a chance, and at least we would not have to invest the money it would take to get Brey away from Notre Dame.

Brey was consistent at getting to the Tournament (before this year in the ACC), but not advancing past the first weekend. He would not do better here and could easily do worse (most of his players are from Indiana or Mass and used the Catholic school connection). His name would not get fans excited. Here he is "teaching": LINK

I'd much rather take a chance with less money at stake and hope we catch lightning in a bottle.

My hope is that Sandy is just reaching out to him for recommendations and advice.

From an APR perspective this would be a good hire, getting AAU talent to South Bend is difficult so Brey has to prioritize academic success for his teams, which of course he has done well. But that therefore makes recruiting a questionable aspect, but I think Sandy may be going for Brey due to a main focus on APR.

He at least had a few deep runs in March, Brey has 1 Sweet Sixteen.
