God he better bring guys. I am praying he has good relationships with Rooks, Bird and Mathews from the past recruiting wars or it is going to be ugly. Oh well, the life of a bears fan.

If it is JP, we would have to conclude we now have our version of Nike Phil.

There's really no reason to go for a Pasternack over DeCuire. I could understand hiring a guy with a track record of head coaching experience, but to go after another program's assistant over our own, that's odd. Heck, I'd take a Howland or Brey over Pasternack.

Also, he probably doesn't have a great relationship with Rooks.

Please explain. Do you mean he's so good he's expensive and someone ponied up the cash? Or do you mean there's an alumn effectively running the show, making the decision?

Not to be rude, but nobody on this roster is so great that their relationship with the new coach is of paramount importance.

There's simply no good info out there. They are doing a great job of keeping their lips sealed. We're hearing names like Turner and this guy and that guy that part of me feels like it won't be any of these guys, sort of like how UCLA hired Alford by surprise last season. If it is indeed a surprise, I just hope it isn't a bad one.

From reports from other places, it is this, if Joe is the hire.

It seems like if the only guys being considered are the ones we've heard of, this would have been done by now.

4thGen hinted at this.

I'd MUCH rather have DeCuire.

I think it is one of two things. Either there is rift between the people who are supposed to be making the decision and the money behind the program, or it is the typical slow UC bureaucracy. Or both. I would be surprised by a surprise.

But of course I don't know anything on any topic.

+1. No Kobe or Lebron on this roster

I had a lot of weird dreams last night, so something was up with my head, but I woke up this morning with a strong feeling that the reason for the rumored announcement yesterday being taken back is that we were going to announce DeCuire, but had a last second possibility of poaching a highly successful power conference coach that we hadn't been looking into (Tom Crean? Jay Wright?).

Sadly, that feeling has since worn off. I hope it's Decuire but I won't throw a fit if it's Pasternack unless we have 2+ transfers/decommits, at least one of which is either Bird or Matthews.

It is already going to be ugly. Monty got out at the right time. Cal has bottom third in the conference talent going into next year. And unless Bird cares more about college basketball than the pros, he is not going to waste a year sitting out.

Don't agree with that at all. A lot of teams are losing quite a lot in the conference. Think we'll be competing for another top 3-4 finish in conference in 2014-2015.

Arizona, Oregon, CU (if Dinwiddie stays) will be at the top, as they'er the best teams with the most returning. I would then guess UCLA and Utah, who returns everyone, and then likely us. Most of the other teams are not very good and lose a lot.

Joe Pasternack was Braun's video guy before becoming an assistant coach and is Roxy Bernstein's brother in law. He's a nice guy who can recruit but there is something about him I really don't like. He also was a student manager for Bobby Knight, I believe.

Agree.

And how much of a factor was he in guys deciding to play for Arizona?

Like kicking Jorge while snarling?

Given that he has, so far as I know, made no meaningful apology for his cowardly, dastardly behavior, what an embarrassment it would be for Cal now to hire the joker.

Go Bears!

I would think a lot since he knows the Bay Area. Confirm tsuba? But yah, I'm not a big fan, esp. with the Jorge incident. But if Roxy vouches for him, I could be persuaded. Anyway, right now out of the all the names bandied about, I want TD.

Arizona could be preseason No. 1 in the nation. Utah, CU, Oregon, and UCLA should be tournament level teams going into the season. Stanford loses Powell and Huestis but has a good class and some injury redshirts getting eligible. I'd probably put all those teams above us going into the season.

Basically ABOUT where we were picked to finish this year. But take away Bird, Rooks (and Mathews?) Where do you put us THEN???!!

He's Roxy's brother-in-law, of course he is going to vouch for him.

I'd rather hire Roxy for the job.

But yes, unless there is some great surprise candidate out there, I am really hoping they hire DeCuire.

Yeah, somewhere in the middle is where I see us too. Anything above that (and an invite to the Tournament) would be evidence of a great coaching job.

Thank you for this recap. I hated Braun like most hated Tedford at the end. I cringe at the thought of taking anyone with a Braun connection. Howland is no longer my least favorite potential candidate.

That's the thing though...knowing the Bay Area coaches is one thing, but are those Oakland Soldiers getting convinced by Joe P that Arizona is the school for them, or is it simply Midnight Madness, the rankings, easy academics, etc. that is doing all the heavy lifting for him?

There are a few large Jewish donors and from what I hear there is pressure from them to hire Pasternack.

You're kidding me. Would I push to hire a Korean coach just because I am Korean? I'm looking for one with connections to the Oakland Soldiers. How about that Korean kid (well he would be nearly my peer) that was a walkon for Braun. Kirk Kim or something?

Pasternak is not my choice, for a variety of reasons already posted here.
Theo's good friend is Lou Ritchie, Ivan Rabb's HS coach.
The fact is, our assistant coaches have a great relationship with most everybody. I believe two things held back greater recruiting, and it wasn't the assistants:

1. Uncertaintity of Monty's tenure. I know for a fact that Poetl and Welsh both asked about it. Welsh went to UCLA because he wanted an assurance that Monty would be his coach, and didn't get it.

2. Cal's image as a difficult academic school. Most AAU kids are swayed to easier academic schools. Think about an inner city AAU kid , who might even have a 3.0. He is now in classes with practically 100% valedictorians. Daunting, to say the least.

#1 is now answered, and the kids like Travis. Recruits will know who their coach is going to be for the next 3-4 years minimum. It will still be up to the coach to convince kids, but...#2 will always hurt Cal against the likes of Arizona (especially), Oregon, Utah, USC, San Diego State etc....until Cal figures out how to make it less intimidating for kids to actually get through Cal. It is the elephant in the room when it comes to 4-5 star players.

Also didn't' we learn our Jewish coach lesson for Jewish donors during the Braun reign, seem to remember that's why he lasted as long as he did.
