Chauca on pixie dust + milk = Steph Curry?

Except Steph is 6'3" so Chauca would need a whole lotta milk.

Chauca was a pleasant surprise. The way he was talked about on "another site", I expected him to be a wreck. Obviously, it remains to be seen how he does against better competition and his lack of size will always be an issue, but I liked that he looked confident out there. Freshmen usually come in jittery and he hits a three on his first shot.

When Chauca was 2 for 2 from 3, I was reminded of Eric Verneisel going 4 for 4 from deep in his debut.
That may have been his career moment. He had Haas buzzing that night! Me included.

If he were over 6 ft, I'd be unreservedly ecstatic with his first game. Played with a belief that he belongs. Shot well. Good vision and some really nice passes. My only reservation is whether his size will limit him against better competition.

There have been a few guards under 6 feet in the conference that have excelled.
Randle
Stoudemire
Isiah thomas
Edney
Brooks
Knight
Carson
Probably others

Come to think of it they are pretty few and far between. But Brandon doesnt need to have a career like the ones above to be considered a success.

I picture him coming off the bench. Cal will be recruiting better players starting next year. At that height and athletic ability, there is only so much he can do. Randle was a much, much better athlete.

He reminds me of Shantay Legans. Legans did not improve in three years because he was athletically challenged and because his skills were so developed when he arrived. But he was still useful, as Chauca is and will be. Chauca is much more fun to watch.

The comparison to Shantay is a good one. Comparing Chauca to Randle does a diservice to Jerome's excellent deep shooting ability and many clutch performances.

Isn't a little early to make either of those comparisons?

From the little I saw of Chauca, I think he's a lot quicker than Shantay. And who is to say he will not have Jerome's range?

Of course he cannot at the moment measure up to Randle. He has played in one ragged game.

For some reason I am having a hard time remembering Shantay. Isn't he the guy that shot it from deep pretty well and eventually transferred to fresno state? Did he pass well? Handle? Defense?

from watching only one game, I'd say....

Randle was quicker and the better ball handler
Chauca has better vision (passing)

those are the only two aspects that I have a feel for at this point

Chauca gave Cuonzo plenty of reasons to give the guard more minutes in crunch time. Actually, with Bird out, he has no choice. Good to see Chauca appears able to handle it--and actually thrive.

...he would have been a blue chip. As it is, I'm glad we got him. Anything that allows TW to play more at the wing and in the post is a good thing for this team. Having another sure ball handler might even allow playing Singer at the 2 at times so he can get more shots in rhythm and hopefully get some confidence back. I hope as the season progresses, Singer will find his shot.

Not exactly. He could drill 3 pointers when left wide open. This reputation caused him to have to shoot further and further out which caused his 3pt% to drop. He could run the break and beat the press, but was awful in the half court.

Other teams figured out that Legans was slow and could not finish at the rim, but that he was a good shooter when open. They pressured him relentlessly, and he had no counter. Cal would often starts its offense (if you would call what Braun ran an offense) a few feet from mid court when he was in the game because he could not get any closer. It was sad to watch. I fear Chauca will have the same problem, though I have been wrong many times before.

I actually think of Chauca as a Michael Adams-style short two guard. Stick him in the corner and have him hit threes with his super quick release or drive off players jumping at him. That is actually the role he played often against Montana. You want Wallace with his ability to get anywhere he wants on the court to initiate the offense.

Legans hit about a 40 foot shot to beat USC, Never forget it

Matt Barnes hit legans about 40 feet.

One thing legans did do well was hit fts. I remember games being essentially over if cal had a late lead cause he wouldn't miss in crunch time.

For the life of me, I don't understand why we give the ball to Wallace and not bird when opposing teams are fouling late in games.

Hi there!

Wet blanket here - and I'd like to allow Chauca a bigger sample size before comparing him to Jerome Randle or anyone else. I think some of the posters may need to take off their blue-colored glasses a bit. I didn't expect much at all from him and was thrilled to see how he performed on Wednesday - that was a nice debut. However, as others have mentioned earlier in this thread - there were some shortcomings on defense, how he takes it to the hole against DI competition as well as how the rest of the team plays with Chauca on the floor.

However, with Singer struggling a bit it is certainly great to see that we have other options to explore before conference play begins. I thought this team would be struggling to find a 7 man rotation due to lack of options. Boy - I love being wrong in situations like this!

Exactly. Randle only shot .302 from three as a freshman and in his first two years I was constantly debating with people on this board who were convinced Nikola Knezevich was the better point guard and player. Chauca compares just fine at this point. On the other hand, Jerome Randle was Pac-12 Player of the Year as a senior, and I think that is where the comparison is unfair (like comparing Goff to Rodgers).
