WHAT!!! How has this story never been told?

I'm guessing Braun was recruiting Vierniesel, and likely others. Huh.

Doubtful. I considered him, but Randle would have been just entering his sophomore year of high school. Viernesel was entering his senior year of high school.

I think he was just passing through town to visit a Chicago Deli.

I always shake my head that Alex Gonzalex gets such a pass in this game. This was 2 batters after the infamous incident.

Braun is a Chicago native. I'm guessing he's a real Cubbies fan.

As the article says, Braun had returned home to watch the Cubbies in 2003 advance to the World Series. His dad grew up there, he played SS for chicago suburb New Trier HS baseball team, he's always been a Cubs fan.
Braun was right near Bartman that night. He was the one who called security when he saw things getting out of hand in a hurry with other fans' rage.

"I was only a couple rows behind him and I saw what was happening. Fans were very irate," Braun recalled to The Associated Press at Pac-12 men's basketball media day Thursday. "First it was insults, then it was beer cups, then it was beer bottles and other things. Pretty soon I said, 'You know, I think somebody better contact the security, it's pretty serious,' so I did. Security came and escorted him out. Of course they had to cover him because people were throwing things at him. From what I understood they took him back into the clubhouse, kept him there 'til after the game and got him out of town somehow, maybe put him in disguise. That was going to be a pretty ugly incident."

Braun still remembers it well.
It's a bit of a stretch, however, to suggest Bartman might owe his life to Braun. How many others called for security, including security themselves, who certainly could have already been in motion on their own.
I think if the Cubs make the WS, they should invite Bartman out to throw the first pitch and allow the community to apologize. He could publicly apologize for being the wrong guy at the wrong moment. It was innocence, really, all the way around. It would be cathartic for everyone.

I swear this came out a few years ago in a different article because I know I have heard it before. May have even been posted on BI with the comment that braun saying he might have saved bartmans life was an embelishment like telling recruits he had a national championship ring from (from the 1999 NIT)...

Of course, I've been the Chicago. I even have family there. Okay, well, they are Boston transplants, so I suppose that doesn't count.
But, ya know, it's just lame bitterness.
Just like the Buckner bitterness. **** happens.

And for the record, none of it compares to the reasons why Cal didn't go to the Rose Bowl on Jan 1 2005.

I also have relatives in Chicago and they take sports serious. The SNL Ditka skits with George Wendt...complete and utter understatement.

I don't think Bartman would have been killed but mobs have a way of getting unhinged. Wrigley would have gotten to the level of a typical Euro soccer or biker bar fight.

Please provide examples of Americans getting out of control en masse in stadiums as you suggest. I don't think we are as bad on THOSE people.

It says he was on the recruiting trail, not that he returned home to see them in the World Series:

"Former California basketball coach Ben Braun had returned home to Chicago on the recruiting trail...."

I agree, though, that it's a stretch to say he saved Bartman. That's why I said "may have", and I only even got that from the headline.

You're absolutely right, American do not start riots in stadiums...because they paid for a ticket. Outside the stadium, that's another story.

So you're right, Braun didn't save that Cubs fan. They would have only caved in his head, not kill him.

You're telling me Ben pulled a Ferris Bueller? What a guy.

Rod Benson was the one that told the story, that Braun flashed the ring on his players like he was the godfather. Rod couldn't believe that he was calling it his NIT "national championship" ring.

Doesn't the "N" in NIT stand for National? And didn't the Bears win that championship? JK.

He did. Just go with it. They probably shared a Lou Malnati's after Bartman was secure.

Can you imagine that there was a possibility (albeit a low one) that foodie Ben Braun and Steve Bartman shared a deep dish pizza together after he was OK (you know, both being hungry after going through such an ordeal)? I wonder if Bartman became a Cal fan. Wait, that explains a lot!!!
