+ Many. There is something very good going on at Wheeler High in Georgia. What TWO great Bears to represent.

Wow, I'm impressed. He came to Berkeley to find his path, like many, many before him. He's in the right place. Love the Xbox story.

Getting a blue chip like Brown to come to Cal was already a once-in-a-decade type situation. But to also have such a intellectually-curious individual that truly represents the Berkeley student ideal...that is one in a million!

everything else aside--that's just plain cool.

Comes off as a really smart kid, and way more mature than I was at any point in college. Still cracks me up that people were saying he's going to X school because they're a Nike or Adidas school or whatever.

I know from reading bluesaxe's post about the pros and cons of early NBA entry that it is almost always the correct financial decision to turn pro early....but this young man gives me the impression that he doesn't follow the beat of anyone else's drum....it would not surprise me if he stays at Cal for at least a second year....Ivan too!!

Lol:

Quote:

"If we wanted something, we had to explain why we wanted it," said Brown to the group, giving an example of the time his grandmother asked him and his brother to write a paper explaining why they needed a new Xbox 360. "We came up with some lame excuse like eye-hand coordination."

Yeah, I hear ya. But it's just too much money to turn away - don't you think?
It's one thing if you already have $20M in the bank, but if you don't (and I'm assuming neither does) then you gotta go a get your first safety net amount in the bank.

I noticed how at both the Scrimmage (standing with fans to take foto with them) and the Exhibition (post game interview with TV guys), that he takes a very humble/respectful posture with his hands calmly/patiently behind his back. It's unusual. Usually the big confident (sometimes arrogant) jock will have a look on his face like "I'm the man" and they will sweat all over you or look past you, or stand with hands on hips like "come on, why is this taking so long".
Just in watching him this bit, there is a bit of difference in Jaylen Brown's character. I like it. A lot.

Now then, just to make sure I'm not completely falling all over myself in adoration, I'll add that it's also interesting how after he makes a pretty cool bucket, he'll stop for a second in pause before running back downcourt as if to say, "wow, did y'all see that?" He's a painter, admiring his works of art, perhaps.

I think you are still falling over yourself, by admiring or accepting as at least as OK, Jaylen's pause, if your observation about a pause is accurate. Recall Kidd, who never wasted a second or millisecond on the court; on occasion Jason would steal the inbounds pass after scoring, by keeping his mind on the game. That is the focus on the game for which every player should strive. No basketball player is entitled to a voluntary pause on the court, at least while the game is being contested.

From the SJ Merc article:
...taking a postgraduate class during his first semester in college. The class is part of a Master's degree program on Cultural Studies of Sport in Education.

"I told him several times I didn't think it was a good idea," said professor Derek Van Rheenen, who teaches the class and has never had a freshman -- athlete or not -- take one of his postgraduate courses. "He really was persistent. I kept saying no. But I said if you're really serious about this, talk to the dean."

.....

Van Rheenen, who also directs the Cal athletic student center, said he spoke on the phone with Brown before he arrived on campus -- as he does with many prospective athletes.

"I came away feeling this is an incredibly mature, interesting young man," Van Rheenen said. "He chose Berkeley because he really believed he's going to get a first-rate opportunity. And he's doing everything to make sure that happens."
I wonder if this conversation happened before Brown committed, or after.
In either case, Brown certainly came away impressed, as I assume after that Brown decided he wanted to take Van Rheenen's class. So, I wonder who this guy is:

https://asc.berkeley.edu/about/staff/administration/derek-van-rheenen/

He is a 3 time Berkeley graduate: '86, '93, '97 (undergrad, masters, phd). Google says he's 51, born in Nigeria (yes, a white guy). He was a semi-pro soccer player with 3 clubs in SF. Check out his books!

Seems like he could hold his own in a debate with Barsky over the net benefit of D1 sports to a university.
