It's a good time to be going to Eugene. The Ducks are IMO, the most athletic team in the Pac 12 and right with Arizona and Cal as the most talented. However, they are just now easing Villanova transfer Ennis into the mix and Jordan Bell is still not 100% health wise. They have a bunch of new and younger pieces and their chemistry has not been good, thus the rough loss to Oregon State on Sunday.

I'd bet a lot of money that Altman will get the chemistry figured out, he's worked with huge turnover almost every year he's been at Oregon and his teams have gotten better and better as the season has progressed. They will be up for Cal and hopefully their chemistry issues will continue, the lack of fan interest will linger (only drawing 6k a game) and we can get a win tomorrow night.

Matchup wise, they are not a big team. They have a ton of athletic 6'6 and 6'7" kids with long arms. They will switch everything in man to man and like to zone where their size and quickness bothers 3 point shooters. Chris Boucher is a newcomer that has played lights out for them. Skinny 6'10" kid who is super bouncy (3+ shots a game) and can hit threes (33%). Bell is not a beefy guy either but a great natural shot blocker and rebounder in the post, albeit only 6'9". They play good defense albeit the zone gives up a lot of threes. They don't foul much and they are a momentum team that thrives on transition and hitting the open three.

Oregon State has quietly become a solid team. Smart, tough and defensive minded, they now have enough talent to play with the big boys. We outclass them yet they will not give you anything, you need to bring your A game as Oregon learned on Sunday.

Both Oregon and Oregon State are loved right now by RPI so road wins against both would be huge for us.

congrats i believe in you... .....
amazing that one poster hasn't shot at you for having a son @ Oregon...
I too have a son at Oregon... third year and killing it in school... loves his Ducks and the Bears too....
Enjoy your visit to Eugene... we are bummed that the games in Eugene are so early this year or we'd be there with you!
Go Bears!!

Surprised you didn't mention Cal target Tyler Dorsey. He's their one real 3-point threat, hitting at 47% and averaging 14.6 ppg. Given that they shoot a lot of 3's, they are only at 32% as a team. I don't know if Dorsey is playing the point or SG, but he's only averaging 2.9 apg against 2.4 turnovers.

Thanks for the breakdown. Anyone know if Cal flies home between games in Oregon? Cal can beat both these schools but the backend at OSU scares me a bit. Well prepared team after a talented UO. OTOH, if Cal plays D like since UVa, Cal has a very good chance.

This makes sense. Spring semester doesn't start until Jan 12. Go Bears!

It's been a long time since I've tripped in Oregon.

Both teams will be tough
For ducks, I'm concerned with their stretch/athletic bigs. They could draw our 7 footers away from the basket where they don't do as well

For OSU, I'm concerned with The Glove (on both sides of the floor) and Tinkle (would he have signed with Cal if his father was still at Montana?)

Idk why but I'm not as concerned about the ducks as I was about Utah. I think we win both. This is weird.

If I am either Oregon school I am not looking forward to playing the Bears. Being Irish, I have pessimism in my DNA. With that said, I am strongly feeling a Cal sweep.

I'm very interested to see how we play against the inevitable zone that is going to get thrown out at us against Oregon. My sense is that OSU plays straight man but what the hell do I know (not much).

Ennis is back in a boot and will not play. Not that it hurts them, as he hasn't played all year.
Another kid announced he is transferring

Typical Alrnan team. Dangerous.

We discussed Dorsey a LOT during recruiting. I actually thought he was going to come here (based on nothing, though).

What about the Monty PG recruit that we had (name escapes me)? Wasn't he on the O roster last year? I see that he isn't now. It was probably reported here, but I forget...

we are 3 1/2 point dogs. history says we play them tough. an outright win will be huge for our rpi. go bears.

An outright win would be huge, but as for rpi, a win is a win, doesn't matter against whom.

A win on the road combined with a game against a team with a decent RPI would give a nice bump to the RPI.

At the end of the season, when everything is said and done, it wont matter to the RPI who the win was against.

We also currently have the most wins in country - 5- versus the Top 50 RPI. That hopefully is a good early sign...

Beat the Ducks!

WOW! Nice find, I did not realize that. Even more interesting/impressive, is that Xavier and Michigan State are the only other teams in the country with even 4 wins vs the top-50 RPI. Everyone else in the country has 3 or less . . .

From ESPN:

California at Oregon (Eugene, Oregon), 6 p.m., ESPN2, Wednesday: The Golden Bears are starting to hit their stride. They’re 10 seconds away from having a nine-game winning streak, as they lost 63-62 to Virginia in overtime. Cal’s upset of No. 24 Utah on Sunday was further validation. The Ducks are undefeated at home and have a 16-game home win streak dating back to last season.

Prediction: California 70, Oregon 64.

It's interesting but the rpi is not too reflective of team strength right now. UCSB is in the top 50 and they have a losing record.

I'd be surprised if Altman doesn't zone and pressure against us. It'll be interesting to see whether CM stays with the big lineup at try's to go smaller. To come away with a W here, it will have to be earned.

Agree, it will be tough. Ore should be favored in this playing at home and motivated to rebound from their loss.

Blowing another 31 point lead would work for me.

If the Bears keep playing lights-out on defense, then we'll be in every game. However, to me it is still a question mark whether we can sustain that effort and intensity game after game. Especially on the road. And especially after we've tasted some early conference success, and human nature being what it is, it would not be surprising to see a let-down of intensity.

If we are close to our recent level on defense, then I think it's going to come down to 3-point shooting. Matthews has to have a cold game eventually. Except for him and possibly Bird, I don't consider anyone else particularly reliable from 3-point range.

These games both look pretty close on paper - I'm guessing a split.
