Teammate Jemarl Baker is considered one of the top high school guards in the country. He is an uncanny shooter, lock-down defender and floor leader in every sense of the phrase.
These two senior standouts have been called 'Batman and Robin'.
But Roosevelt didn't accomplish all it has this season to be in a position to play for a CIF-State championship on the strength of just this dynamic duo.
As Mitchell put it Saturday: "I had my teammates behind my back and playing at their best. I would say they helped me along the way."
Roosevelt (25-8) will play Union City James Logan (28-5) for the State Division I championship Friday night at the Golden I Center in Sacramento. The tip is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Roosevelt is just the fourth boys team from Riverside County to reach a State final since 1982 when the CIF began pairing California's Southern and Northern regional champions.
Roosevelt joins Banning (1982), Riverside King (2002) and Centennial (2014) as the only county teams to get this far. Only King has come home a winner.
Baker, a 6-4 point guard, averages 17.3 points, 4.2 assists and has made 94 3-pointers and nearly 300 in his four-year career.

I'm watching the game now, Roosevelt up 27-20 at the half. Baker was 1-5 from the field with a few FTs, I think he has 5 pts at the half

Baker is not shooting well (I think he's 1-7 now), but he is a very good passer

the announcers briefly mentioned the Cal coaching hire and wondered if Jemarl will stay. Does not appear they talked to him before the game.

I watched the entire game and thought that PG Baker played a totally uninspired game. He never ran full speed, never hit the floor for a loose ball, etc. He missed layups and I did not see him hit a three. He hit a nice floater from the left corner and some free throws. Jemarl did have a couple of nice assists...He was not intense on defense and I find it suprising that Cuonzo Martin would recruit such a non-hustling player. Yes-I am aware of his stats but as the tv announcers stated #21 Mitchell, a Cal State-Fullerton recruit, carried Roosevelt.

Based upon last night-I don't see him receiving major minutes in the Pac 12. I was probably more underwhelmed with this guy
than any Cal recruit in recent memory. Did anyone else see what I witnessed vs James Logan? Is there a box score available for the game?

The one good thing that came out of the tv announcers was the Mater Dei SF was it the top ten players in the state and was MD's best player. Cal's other 6-2 guard recruit
was not on the list nor was Baker...

BBLA: I remembered that the other guard was Dyson but I forgot the 1st half of this hyphenated (sp?) last name. What did you think of Jemarl Baker's performance last night? Curious...Another comment made by Casey Jacobsen was that Cal recruited him for his three point shooting prowess...GO BEARS!

His recent stats have not been great except for that one playoff game against a relatively easy opponent in El Camino Real. May be fatigue due to too many games. Keep in mind the school first played in the Southern Section championship bracket but when they lost they had to keep playing in the consolation bracket. And then came the state playoffs. That and the emergence of teammate Matt Mitchell.

I watched a good part of that game, the first time I've seen anything other than highlights, and I was impressed. His shots just weren't falling, but I know shooting is one of his strengths. I thought his vision, passing ability, and decision making were better than I expected. I guess he wasn't as aggressive as I expected, but I would also guess that if his shots were falling, he probably would have been more assertive.

Coulda sworn I recently saw Jemarl listed at 6-4 (instead of the usual 6-2). Does this mean he's growing, a la Allen Crabbe? (Crabbe was listed at something like 6-3, 165, when he first committed to Cal in his junior year.) Maybe Jemarl is becoming "classic" shooting guard size?
