That's an exaggeration, to say the least.

There's a big gulf between those that think he'll quite likely start and be better than people think vs those that think he's a limited minutes backup.

I've seen exactly zero people hype him as an all-conference caliber player.

If it's so obvious, are you being redundant, condescending or both?

+1. ALL our guards need to do is....

Penetrate and dish
Keep teams honest by forcing a man to guard them out top.

They don't need to be all conference with the weapons we have.

BTW - who else is getting happy every day that passes and we don't see an announcement from our Frosh. <Raises hand>

the rules state that if you declare and go get an evaluation, including the tryout camp and what not, and you decide to return to college, you can do it again and again. That's new for this year. Therefore, why not do that each and every year?!

you should anticipate them declaring, bird and mathews too, I would think, and then if you want to be a complete bear fan, wait until the last-day-to-withdraw-your-name date, and see if they do indeed withdraw from the draft and return to Cal.

It's drawn up. It just needs to be signed off by Napolitano. Who knows how long that could take?

I think the SC guards, Holder and Allen get the mentions for all conference. I don't think anyone outside Cal even knows about Coleman.

Oh, got it. Yea, the coaching staff didn't say he was the a lll conference. Just that they are expecting him to surprise and play a lot.

Ivan had said in an interview that roman davis was going to be real good, with raised eyebrows and eyes wide open, like upside surprise.
Did the people/person you speak to add anything here?

And how many have you seen say he will be a limited minutes backup guy?

For the record, I've seen one poster in this thread compare him to all-conference level players.

CC Cajon isn't looking, so I'm gonna place my bets here: Coleman starts by Jan 1. and thru Pac12 conference play.

CalHoopFan;842658033 said:

He's a "meh" - Good length, decent all around sklll set, hard working kid with a high motor. Don't see a ton of upside with his average athleticism. A better back up PG than Chauca is what we got.

BearDevil;842658017 said:

Coleman doesn't need to be an immediate savior or compete with Sam as the 2017 starter. Just needs to be able to play 10-15 MPG next season and compete for PG starter as a junior and senior. Anything above that is gravy. Chauca wouldn't be able to do that.

CalHoopFan;842658039 said:

Not an explosive, fast twitch athlete. Jordan Mathews is a good comparison in this regard. Decent handle and will use the left but doesn't finish well with the left - very right handed offensively. Got some strength and not afraid to mix it up at either end. Hustles, high motor defensive player. Best part of his game is a solid release on his jumper. Not super quick but not slow either and good form. Don't see him beating folks off the bounce regularly. Best case feels like a smart, tough kid who can shoot and handle it a bit as a backup PG.

tsubamoto2001;842658049 said:

I wouldn't expect him to be like Dorsey. Dorsey is an NBA-prospect and we can hope this guy becomes a contributor to the program. Maybe an Emerson Murray that pans out.

sluggo_Cal;842658113 said:

If you are going to play pressure man-to-man defense and freelance offense the number one thing you need is quickness. This is why Chauca never gets on the floor, and I don't see how Coleman will be any different.

sluggo_Cal;842658122 said:

Some people here argue that Chauca is quick. He is more frenetic and Coleman is more smooth. Neither is quick enough to play in the pac12.

BearDevil;842658749 said:

The most pressing program need is for a backup PG who can play 5-15 MPG in 2017. Coleman's perfectly capable of that and anything above that is a bonus.

There's a lot more than that, too. So obviously plenty view him that way.

Have you seen him play? How would you come to the opinion that his upside might be somewhat better than a major bust like Emerson?

Eventually starting over Singer next season's not exactly a super high bar.

Those are pretty funny comments, all of us.
We haven't seen him play yet, so we are once again talking out of one side of our collective brain.
Anyways, ya know what I'm really forward to?
Hearing about how the kids from the south likes it out west.
The west is the best, you know! His mind will EXPLODE! (Never mind my personal bias.)

There's footage of him playing on YouTube. I wish I had those 30+ minutes of my life back as it was a bad JC game.

And how exactly was Emerson a bust? The guy was a late-signing period reach. He turned out exactly the way he was supposed to. He actually looked better in his film than Coleman does, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Eventually starting over Singer is a high bar for Coleman, a lightly recruited player, considering Singer will be a senior and is a pretty good player that has starting experience and played well when he actually got a chance to run the show. And according to Martin, he should have been an All Defense this past season. There's no logic, based on the information that's out there, that supports Coleman supplanting Singer as the starter. Maybe you're right and Coleman surprises.

Ah, I took limited minutes backup guy to mean more limited than a backup guy. Yes, lots of posters are predicting he will back up Singer next year. To me there is no slight in that. I count one poster that rated Coleman less than that.
MoragaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
No, no slight in thinking he'll back up a senior Singer. No one knows what will happen for certain. I just think some are underselling him to a decent extreme.

There are plenty of guys that have played for Cal in recent years or currently that those close to the program didn't project to start but Coleman's not one of them, for the most part.

Justin Cobbs averaged only 2.1 ppg as a frosh at Minnesota.
He was a starter to great effect at Cal.
