super article and in depth talk with Shareef.
He is a real example, and has done and will do great things.

Of course, we would have liked him to go to Haas,

PhD? upcoming?
He can come back to Berkeley!!!

(My older bro got BA at Cal/Mech Engineering;
PhD engineering program at Cal wants their doctoral candidates to have gotten their Masters elsewhere...so
he got his Masters at Illinois Tech. Came back to Cal and attained his Engineering PhD at Berkeley.
Has worked for 'the government' since late 60's. Still working for them. We don't ask...what he does

Can't believe how much criticism he used to get from Cal fans or the number who didn't believe he came to Cal for the education.

Although it was clear that he came here for the education, expressly because Cal had a special, Muslim Studies program: In those days it was still somewhat (and maybe especially because of the academic passion and obvious intelligence he had) a shock to have a kid be one and done -- Remember, not even Jason Kidd did that.

Yep...and a strong connection to Mo (which Kidd also had).

He was criticized by many Cal fans for his play--before he left.

Which, given that he was picked third in the draft, probably tells us something we already knew about "many Cal fans" . . . Interesting

Perhaps a somewhat fair criticism is that he seemed that he used his Cal season to first practice on his game and second to win games?

It tells us nothing about Cal fans because it didn't happen. He was player of the year as a frosh and was awesome. I don't know anyone who had an issue with his play. Not to mention the fact that Cal fans' criticism was almost entirely focused on Jelani Gardner who sucked so bad you could probably blame him for at least 5 losses if it weren't for the fact that Bozeman was primarily to blame for not yanking him and putting in Prentice MacGruder. Nothing worse than having a point guard who chucks indiscriminately AND who is a terrible shooter.

If anyone has an issue with Shareef, it was questioning the one and done thing which was a first for us. (Though I had no issue)

Those who don't remember all the negativity from Cal fans in the stands or on talk radio--including much criticism of Shareef, probably don't remember all the criticism of Allen Crabbe, Jerome Randle or will forget all the criticism of Jaylen Brown....

Nope, not the case here. What was all the negativity towards Shareef about?

Mostly people called him a ball hog. Complained that he took too many outside shots, was looking only for his stats, didn't help the team win, was not a good passer. Many people did not like Bozeman so it spread to the players who were closest to him, especially after the NCAA investigation into his recruitment. Shareef was guided to Cal by Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf who refused to stand for the National Anthem and called the American flag a symbol of oppression...Shareef's mom and sister moved out to Oakland so some Cal fans believed the charges of Bobby Cremins and Coach K who were bitter about losing out on Shareef's recruitment. All stuff that I thought was very unfair to the kid and has proved to be completely off-base. Shareef was and is one of the most principled people you will ever meet and a true credit to Cal.

100% agreed. OaktownBear's synopsis comports with my memory of that 1995-96 season and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. He was incredible.

This sounds more like the criticism that I remember was directed to Jelani Gardner or maybe even Tremaine Fowlkes, not Shareef.

I don't even recall Shareef taking outside shots. Shareef played mainly in the paint, and he was damn good at it. The most sensational freshman year I have ever seen a Cal basketball player put forth, and that includes Jason Kidd and his freshman year.

As for the supposed ball hogginess and supposedly poor passing, again that was Jelani Gardner. Or Tremaine Fowlkes. Or Ed Gray. Shareef was the #1 scoring option on the team and didn't get the ball as much as he should have in the latter half of the Pac 10 season or in his lone NCAA Tournament game. In other words, he should have shot MORE, not less.
