Really impressive to see a 5'11" point guard come in and set the Cal freshman scoring record in his second career game with 38 tonight.

Wanted to go back and check out his intro video again and forgot how he finished it off: I know we're going to win the Pac-12.

Gotta love his confidence.

Nice time to revisit this.
thx.

It was fun to see his teammates be so excited for him during and after the game tonight!
Makes turning the page to the next chapters that much moore intriguing.
Oh, god, I think we're going to get a lot of those word plays, aren't we...

Charlie, and his game, increase the Bears' swag factor by a lot.

Postgame interview and a few highlights:

His crossover is great and gets him into the key or space to get off his smooth jumper.

38 points beats Shareef's old freshman record of 33. Charlie would have had 40 if Sam had passed him the inbound instead of throwing to Roger at half court with about 30 seconds left.

With everyone else struggling to score, Moore had to carry the offensive load tonight. With Bird and/or Rabb in the lineup Charlie won't need to duplicate this scoring output, but now we know what he can do when the situation presents itself.

Lots of room for improvement and we don't have to worry about a 5'11" guard leaving early for the NBA.

I'm very impressed with his poise and maturity both on the floor and in the post game. He speaks well and is very selfless in his praise, and his manner is if he's been there before. Watching him develop is going to be great.

That was a really impressive performance. Really impressive. And pretty unexpected too following the opening game - who would have known he had it in him to do this?

Absolutely agree regarding Singers pass.....One of those basketball IQ moments

Congrats to Charlie. Holy smokes...what a game. He's a really impressive player. I love his shooting stroke but he just always seems to play under control. Love this guy! Randle is one of my one my favorite all time Cal players and it looks like Charle could be every bit as good. He was absolutely special last night. I had been hoping for a little more off-season development with guys like Domingo and Okoroh but it is what it is. Kam though had a nice game and battled hard. The defensive intensity down the stretch was impressive. Looks like this is gonna be a fun team to watch once we're at full speed.

His smooth pull up 3s off the bounce look a lot like... Mr. Steph Curry.

The zero assists for your point guard is a little alarming, but hopefully that is an anomaly.

Well with the other 3 scorers on the team out, who was there for him to pass it to?

Crazy to think this was his second college game. He took over the game like a seasoned vet. Also he doesn't look all that small to me for a PG. Jusf has that baby face which makes him look like a child prodigy playing against grown men.

Yeah, I was like (in chronological order in my head at the time):
a) did Singer pass to Moute far away b/c he thought that the kid had scored enough? Or,
b) did Singer pass to Moute b/c he felt the kid might get trapped in the corner? Because...

If you are thinking about who NEEDS the ball in their hands at the end of every game where we are nursing a lead, there is NO DOUBT that it is Charlie Moore. That was known before the season started. He is low to the ground and so the far superior dribbler, and he is by far the superior FT shooter.
I would certainly hope that Singer's response is 'b'.

That said, it was nice to see the senior PG congratulating the Frosh PG near the end of the game with pats and hugs!

Yes, BB, I particularly liked the Moore lob to Rooks down the middle that he ended up "traveling" on. That was a dime. Rabb grabs and dunks that.
Also, who made the pass to Rooks that would have been an easy layup, except that he got blocked by a 6'5" guard.
Moore will get his assists! On a night where 2 perimeter shooters (Bird, Mullins) were gone, where his finishing post was gone, Moore had to take on the scoring load. We should all be jumping up and down that he's also got THAT in him, not whining that the A's weren't in the stat book.

What do people want to bet on the following:

Next time Moore scores 20. Or, how many times does he go for 20 this season.
Next time Moore scores 30.
Next time Moore scores 38.
Moore's season ending PPG.

Absolutely! Can't wait to see enjoy his development, especially once he gets stronger and more comfy with college game.

Not that it was relevant for last night's game because we needed almost every single one of his 38 points while the game was still in doubt, but was he known for having a passing game too in HS? He did have a nice look on a transition entry pass to Rooks who couldn't handle it but it would have been an easy deuce if he did. He'll see that he can't lead bigs that much as he gets used to the personnel. But yah, pretty good for game #2!

Actually, the main reason for 0 assists is the fact that Kameron, et al., were getting fouled when CM dished to them. We shot 42 frickin' FT's!
Californication
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree that 0 assists, not to mention only 1 in the first game, highlight a need for improvement in that area. Even if you ignore the stat itself, it's obvious that he needs to improve his floor vision so that he facilitates other players more often because eventually opponents will shut down his drives into the lane.

That being said, his supporting cast last night was not very good from an offensive perspective, and that's being kind, so Charlie did what he needed to do to get a huge victory. Other players also need to hit shots to create assists, because he did have some unrewarded passes last night. Also, I know for a fact that he provided the key pass on one of Domingo's 3's at the end of the game and I cannot figure out what the scorekeeper was thinking by not rewarding an assist (there was no dribble, just a catch-and-shoot).

I really admire his manner, staying composed and focus under pressure. What a fine young man. Cal does recruit quality player!

Martin did say after the game he was concerned for Moore's physical strength playing in his early college games. It will get better.

Would you accept that they just need more time playing together?
Would you accept that his first game was just his 1st game, and that for his 2nd one 3 scorers were out and he had to score himself if we had a chance???

My favorite play was wear he dribble in under the screen at the left 3 pt line to the elbow, took a peak, then kept going sideways across the FT line and then pulled up near the right elbow and buried it. I love that type of patience and maneuverability. I played JC ball with a kid from Tacoma Park MD who was so patient with the ball like that - he'd keep his dribble real low and then suddenly rise up above everyone. Pretty good stuff.

Man, that pull-up jumper from the elbow was MONEY last night. That he already has such a varied arsenal of ways to score in his 2nd game bodes well

FWIW, (And I was watching from a hotel in New England on my tablet at 2 am) -

It seemed that Charlie was not playing the PG 'Role' so much as a perimeter scorer (and driving). ZERO assists does seem anomalous, but I also wouldn't have expected for his role, against UCI, to get 8-10 assists either (but maybe 3 would have been realistic).

As others have said - lack of assists may have been more of a team issue in this game.
Californication
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes, I pretty strongly hedged my criticism based on the surrounding talent. And I only went so far as to say he needs to improve, not that he can't or won't. I LOVE his ball handling and speed, and his shot is pretty nice as well. I think the only real criticism at this point is a lack of control when going to the hoop, to the point that passing seems impossible. But I have no doubt that he will improve if given proper coaching, which I hope he does.

But if you compare him to last year's starter at the position, our team improved when a Senior left and was replaced by a Freshman, not because the player is better at this point, but because he is better at the position they play and the team is better off for it.
