Experimental rules in force for the NIT (not a joke):

1) Four ten-minute quarters (called "segments")
2) Team fouls reset to zero after each segment
3) No 1-1 free throws ... all FTs are 2 shots except a 1-shot FTs when fouled in the act of shooting, and the shot was good
4) 20-second shot clock if ball is inbounded in front court
5) Teams limited to 4 team/technical fouls per segment
6) OT teams are limited to 3 team/technical fouls

What caused all these rules changes? Should have left well enough alone!

New rule for pac-12 officials - stop calling fouls on every possession during regular season!

What does "limited to" mean for #5 and #6? Does that mean that on the 5th foul in a segment or 4th foul in OT, there will be 2 foul shots on ordinary defensive fouls, even if they are not shooting fouls (kind of like there are after 10 team fouls per half under the regular rules)?

Pac12 refs put this conference at a huge disadvantage every year by calling ticky-tact fouls that no other conference calls. Pac12 teams simply aren't ready for NCAA tourney refs.

Rules changes are similar to women's basketball this past season. The Cal women play four 10 minute quarters. When a team commits 5 fouls in a quarter, the opposition gets two shots. High school also has four 8 minute quarters for girls, etc. It's easy to get used to the new rules because it's easier to manage/coach a shorter time period like 10 minutes vs 20 minutes. It seems to me that it is easier to keep track of the pace of the game by quarter than having 20 minute halves. If you have not scored and the 1st quarter shows 6 minutes left, you know almost have of the period is gone with zero points. You may call a timeout. Just my two cents-I like the quarter system better. go bears!

1-3 are the same rules that were adopted for women's basketball.

basically this is an experiment to move to actual quarters next year.

I like it because it eliminates the 1 and 1 FTs, from a commercial point of view, will eliminate those long mid-half commercial timeouts.

only negative is it means teams will play for the last shot 4 times instead of 2 times per game

Those two rules definitely benefit us because a) we get called for a lot of fouls and b) we suck at free throws.

I laughed :-)

Remember the MTV Rock N' Jock games where they had the retractable baskets that came down from the ceiling? I think a shot in one of them was worth 7 points or some such.

So perhaps one less media timeout per half? I like it.

It eliminates 1-1 free throws. Once you're out of team fouls, if you foul, it's two shots for your opponent.

It's actually not Quarters ... the "segment" and the team foul rest occurs when the clock hits 10:00- play is not stopped.

Agree regarding segments
They are doing this as either a way to test moving to actual quarters

Or as a new variation using segments

I'm assuming the first

In that case, it's another way for P-12 refs to screw up.

Nah, man. It was (as high as) 50 points.

Not bloody likely.

Yeah, hard to believe any rule changes that are not approved by (or made by) DIS/ABC/ESPN/SEC.
