you bought into the hype about CM, who was forced out of UT .. and was looking for something else from the day he got here .. WJ is probably as good a coach, perhaps a good recruiter .. so we are basically where we have been for the last 60 years .. from the time that PN left until now has been a parade of mostly also ran type coaches (with one good coach who was past his prime) .. .. you are either a fan or you are not .. I continue to hope for the best, but basically I expect mediocrity from BB as that is what we have come to expect .. I hope the WJ is a big surprise, but it won't be next year.. we may not see much until 2018 or 2019 IF HE IS A GOOD RECRUITER .. if not, then well ****, back to another change in coaches

I would tend to agree. I was commenting on SFCity's point that CM inherited poor defensive players.

His earlier teams at Stanford were rugged physical teams that had a defensive rep and he tended to have quality big men in an era where three point shooting and spacing weren't as highly valued. I wasn't generally impressed with his Cal teams' defense. And sometimes it's all about your assistants.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, SFCity. I just think that because Montgomery was articulate and thoughtful when talking about defense, the consensus among the press was that he was a defensive "genius." FWIW, I think he was excellent at designing defenses to take away an opponent's leading threat, but perhaps not so at teaching (or maybe by the time he got to Cal, he was just tired of teaching).
