....at $2.43 million per. Cuonzo gets $5 million and Coach K $9 million.

If we were a program that had a reputation for being committed to competing with the best in our conference let alone nationally as a culture, we could get a Jay Wright-type from a Hofstra, or an established top-tier coach.

Cuonzo does not get $5m. How many times is that going to be repeated?

How do you know the "Jay Wright-type from Hofstra" will turn out to be like Jay Wright? For every Jay Wright, there are 20 other "Jay Wright types" who turn out to be Jay Wrongs.

It's easy to play Monday Morning Quarterback.

1. Jay Wrong... ha ha, how many times has he heard that in his life?
2. Even on a Tuesday morning.

Jay Wright sure seems like the best college basketball coach over the last few years. He's 15 years younger than Coach K, so will probably stay for a while.

As for plucking the next Jay Wright, don't forget that Villanova has a head start on Hofstra. He was an assistant under Massimino at Nova and followed him to UNLV. I believe he's also from eastern PA.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Wright will be getting a raise, soon, no matter how many years left on his contract. And it will probably be for more than Cuonzo's $3 million.

$3 million, $5 million, what's a couple of million one way or the other among friends at BI discussing Cuonzo?

That is going out on a limb for sure. Villanova is one of 41 mostly small (relatively speaking) private parochial Catholic colleges and universites. The Cathiolic schools are smaller, with undergraduate enrollments of perhaps 2,000 to 8,000 students. Only St. John's has a large undergraduate population of 16,000. In most cases, I don't think the small schools don't have the resources to pay big salaries. As far as I could find out, Wright was already the highest paid coach of any of these small Catholic schools at $2.6M. The only others above $1M that I could find were Mike Brey of Notre Dame $2.4M, Provicence's Ed Cooley $2.2M, Gonzaga's Mark Few $1.9M, and Xavier's Chris Mack $1.7M (who just left for Louisville). I think Randy Bennett of St Mary's makes $1M, and I'm not sure how much Herb Sendek makes at Santa Clara. Many Catholic school coaches do leave for greener pastures like former Xavier coaches Thad Matta (to Ohio State), Sean Miller (to Arizona) and Chris Mack (to Louisville) where they can get the even higher salaries.

Not quite true. Patrick Ewing is getting close to $4 million at Georgetown.

Where did you read or hear that? I didn't include Ewing because his name was not on any of the usual lists for coaches' salaries (Sports Illustrated, 247, USA Today). I did read it was rumored that he might be making close to $4M, but I could not find any official announcement. Most coaches' salaries are not readily available to the public, especially if it is not a high salary.

Private universities aren't required to release the salaries of their employees. Ewing at $4M wouldn't surprise me, though.

And also keep in mind that a lot of these coaches make money (mainly from the shoe companies) beyond what their reported base salaries are.
