Any write up that does not mention Paris, doesn't really understand what is happening at Cal.

I considered this as well. Then I looked at everyone else above us and given coaching and rosters could think of maybe one team I'd possibly move us above. So, seems pretty fair to me.

Do I think we'll be better than the LA schools? Nope.
AZ schools? Nope.
Oregon or UW? Nope.
Mountain schools? Nope.
Wazzu? Probably
OSU? Maybe?
Furd? Probably not.

True. Based on our current roster, we are placed appropriately.

I think we give too much credit or place too much blame, place too much faith or too much doubt in our players (Several of whom we have not yet seen play even a single minute).

But I will say that last season, I did not see anything much from our new coach on the floor, or see anything much from the way the players played and executed for him, that would indicate Cal should be ranked any higher.

Wyking Jones is learning how to be a head coach at any level for the first time in his life, and it will take time for him to do that at D1 level, years perhaps. Right now, can you think of a PAC12 coach whom Wyking could outcoach in a game?

We need to give Jones this season, give him support, and if he does not deliver a better looking show, then we need to decide whether to give him more time, or not. He is the key to everything Cal accomplishes this coming season. Hopefully he has learned more than a little from his mistakes. His off-season has not been handled very well.

You just reminded me of the couple early season games I went to and sat behind the Cal bench. I noticed a poor camaraderie, spirit, or presence. I was thrown a little shade. I think if Jones doesn't get used to being more of a leader in creating positive bench emotion, he's not going to grow into the head coaching role and won't be there long.

Can anyone recall him arguing with refs? Getting after his players? Or is it mild mannered uncertainty all the time. Disclaimer: I'm working with a very limited sample size!

Is our roster set at this point? Are we still holding out on a transfer or has that deadline passed?

Dear Fat: You nailed it. Our roster is incomplete at this time. any prognostications prior to complete rosters is silly & meaningless. I could have added stupid, but, then. you would have thought I was describing the Chronicle.

we need a deadeye 3 point shooter to get competitive.

Whoever we get at this point probably won't make a huge difference.

You don't like your wife/girlfriend?
Or you'd fancy five years with his in addition to yours?

...and I never heard him shoulder any responsibility for a loss. He is the polar opposite of Hue Jackson in his post Raiders' loss pressies.

DearBearister: differing personalities bring different reactions from different people. Bobby Knight, Phil Mathews, etc were alpha dynamic types who repulsed as many people as they attracted. WJ is mild mannered, indeed, but that personality so far has won the approval of parents ( mostly mothers) who are considering sending their sons to Cal. Not all HC'S need be demonstrative at all times if he has assistants to who can exhibit this trait. As long as the HC is respected by his players, the path to respectability is not nearly as important as the reality. WJ will be judged on how well he can coach the talented recruits he is bringing in. for that, we need patience.

I don't know about this. In light of just how difficult the season was, I thought his postgame comments were generally honest, reasonable and refreshingly thoughtful.

I listened to most of the home postgame shows with Todd McKim and Jay John. Some comments after the Portland St. game I didn't love, but otherwise I appreciated hearing the thought process about various decisions, reflections on difficult scenarios, and areas to be improved upon. Anyone going through a season like that is going to make some comments right after the game that one might regret, especially a first year head coach. But on the whole I considered them pretty reasonable.

I interviewed Coach Jones following the brutal losses in Maui, a couple of great wins (SDSU and Stanford), and some awful Pac-12 losses (@ Washington, @ Washington St., @ ASU in particular, as well as @UCLA and the Pac-12 Tournament game against Stanford). It was difficult for everyone.

The Washington game at Seattle stands out to me because of three elements: (1) Darius took an ill-advised shot too early in the shot clock at the end of the first half, Washington came down and hit a buzzer beater 3FG to go up four, with momentum; (2) Marcus Lee fouled out early in the second half; and (3) Coleman picked up his fourth foul with 12 1/2 minutes to go, complained and got a technical (5th personal) and was done for the night. Game over at that point. So I asked Wyking bout all three. He gave thoughtful answers about to each question, which I appreciated. Perhaps he could have shouldered more responsibility for each of those things, but I liked the way he addressed them, and I thought those responses provided really good insight into the thinking of our head coach.

He was furious at his veterans following the Washington State debacle at Pullman. Didn't pull any punches that day. If he made those comments about freshmen I might have thought differently about them, but given they were directed at his three veterans, I thought they were appropriate.

Reasonable minds can differ, so I understand the debate.

We have no experience in the front court. Most other Pac schools do, or like UCLA and Oregon, they have 5 and (not or) 4 star bigs coming in. I expect improvement, but I'm not seeing much improvement in wins and losses absent alleged grad transfers. Wilner is early, so things could change.

Eric, the content is great. Hope the team could also elevate its game. Your making the best of what is currently a bad situation. This is a couple year rebuild, and there is no secret one guy who will turn this team arounds today. It needs bigs, experience and depth, and maybe coaching, though IMO, the staff is good at the assistant level (time will tell re: the head coach). But next year looks like another rebuild.

Thank you WIAF.

I agree it is a multi-year rebuild. However, unlike last season -- which was utterly dismal with only a dim light at the end of the tunnel -- I think next season could be pretty fun. Young guys who are easy to root for, and a veteran PG fans will love. Getting there.

Yup, the optics should look better at a minimum.

I'm hoping and expecting Cal to be better than last year's historically bad team. But 11th place sounds fair to me at this point in time (along with the rest of Wilner's rankings in this article). Check back in December and we'll have a better idea. FWIW, I think the bottom 5 teams are pretty nebulous and Cal may end up finishing ahead of them, simply because they crater and we don't.

However, unless there are a few more pieces to the player puzzle (some size, some shooting and a backup PG), this team is not going to finish top 4 next season unless the coach can pull a rabbit out of his hat. There aren't many coaches that can do that and Wyking did not give any indications that he is in that group, based on last season.

Multi-year rebuild. Maybe Cal gets out the basement and closer to the middle of the Pac this year. Or maybe they are near the bottom and simply look better. If they finish top half of Pac, I think Jones looks pretty good and there is reason for optimism. If they finish bottom half, but show improvement and progress, then Jones still may deserve more time. If they finish bottom half and still look bad . . .
