HD, I appreciate all you write in your reply to my criticism directed at the infrequency with which Kelly sees the ball.
You talk about my wanting to see the ball in Kelly's hands more frequently. What about you? Is there anyone else on this team who is as likely to score?
And Kelly does not have to see the ball simply in the post. Why not screens for him, whereby he might have the ball facing up from 15 to 17 feet? Or even have the ball behind the three point arc?
From the little that I have seen of his having the ball, I have no clear idea of what he can and cannot do with it.
And I could not care less about Wyking's offense, which I see as a disaster. A good defensive team, if it had the desire, could hold our squad to around 40 points a game.
Of course, the team is young and inexperienced, but that does not explain its offensive incompetence. Ditto at the opposite end of the court.
I have watched almost every Cal home game and televised road games since Kuchen's first year, 1978.
Of all those seasons prior to Wyking, never did I feel so unenthused about Cal men's basketball.
I'll be at tonight's game and hope for something good to happen, better offense, better defense, more energy from the team, as hard as that is for me to imagine right now.
It would be nice not to cringe when watching our team.
Yes, I would like to see Kelly get the ball more. I tried to say that here:
"We've done that a number of times.I think you would like to see more plays, sets or actions to get Kelly the ball in the post, and I would agree"
I also think getting him the ball facing the basket would be a good thing, and maybe even from behind the 3. I think we will see that at some point, although not necessarily this year. He has range to take an outside 3 when open as he has demonstrated. I knew he had that shot based upon his HS stats, but he is not a strong 3 point shooter yet. Hopefully he develops his shooting as his career progresses and we can start adding that look later this season or next. I also like bringing him out to the high post and see what he can do. He can drive from there or face up, and I think it's something that could help us.
