What if this team doesn't win many in this awful league this year? They lost to freaking Montana State, and yes it matters that they lost to an awful Big Sky team AND that they gave up 95 points to an awful Big Sky team. It shows a pattern of no defense and not caring.
Yes, they lost to an awful Santa Clara team. There's no indication WSU is even going to win 5 conference games this year the Pac-12's worst season in years if not ever.
Then the buyout must happen. I'm sorry, it just does. They can't afford to be letting 4K-5K at the gate not show up for 15 home games a year. Yes, should they invest more in the program.
But they can't invest in Ernie. I wanted him to succeed, but any middle school coach can see that they don't do basic defensive fundamentals, like close off-baseline, weak-side help (worst I've ever seen at the college level), or freaking stop ball, like the UW guy who went coast-to-coast uncontested, even when he got past half-court and the entire WSU five were there. It's a freaking joke, one can't win with this kind of ball, period. Why haven't any of these assistants -- one clown considered it a "great staff" on the Rivals board -- implement any kind of defense? Haskins' teams played no defense at the high school level; Seltzer had a near player revolt as head coach of Samford. Some "dream team", huh? I like the recruiting coordinator, keep him.
They can't afford to bring Ernie back if he doesn't win in this bad conference. How can anyone justify it ... and I used to be on the Ernie bandwagon.
