We have our own Dennis Rodman and we're not using him properly.

JHD has more fast twitch muscle fibre than a pissed off cheetah. He can jump out of the gym, explosive second jump, and quick as they get....Reminds me of Dennis Rodman...and where do we play him?..as a wide wing where he is handcuffed with limited ball handling ability and sketchy deep shot and so far removed from his athletic calling on the boards.
Red light him on shooting/dribbling from outside and have him receive passes at the elbows..one hard dribble, euro step, floater or a flush. We won't be playing man to man these last 4 games. Let's switch to a 2-1-2 with JHD in the 1 spot in the middle.
He can stay in front of anybody and clog the middle, rim protect and crash the boards on the opposite side of the taken shot. They would never see him coming. From that spot he can get out quick on transition and put back any missed lay ups. Worth a try? I think we win 2 of our last Pac12 games

I thought he could jump out of the gym but I haven't seen him actually finish off an emphatic dunk (at least over anybody).

That said - I was really hoping for a break out season from him after how he played towards the end of last season.

I agree that we might not be utilizing him (and others) to the best of our abilities.

Agreed that he seldom dunks over anybody with authority. I contend that is a result of:
1) His quick first step is negated by his inadequate handle allowing defenders to recover and regain position over him.
2) Defenders know that he can't shoot from 3 land so they leave him alone and pack it in resulting in multiple defenders licking his chops for his arrival in the paint. This kid has a motor.

Totally agree that this would be a better use of JHD, at least at this stage in his development (or maybe any stage). Weird the way he looked better last February than he does this February. Of course, he's about 3" shorter than Rodman, but then, this is college, not the NBA, so...

805, you're bringin' some good stuff: Keep it up!

He is neither the impact defensively, nor on the boards that Rodman was. In fact, he''s just not a very good basketball player at all.

I think he could be a great WR. He should head over to Spring ball and try out. If it works out, helps both programs.

Wes Howell completed his basketball eligibility before we found out he was a great WR, helped us win the 82 Big Game and played in the NFL.

Gosh, if nobody else is going to d this....I volunteer. Even though it's hypocritical of me...because
I find the sniping at each here...to be "not fun"., I have to say this:

The comparison of a CAL player to Dennis Rodman in any context is extremely off-putting especially now. The President (no matter what you think of him) is talking to Rodman's documented buddy....Kim Jong-il.I had to force myself to read the entirety of the post.

Leaving aside Rodman as a human, he was, at the very least, one the absolute best rebounders
ever, but he only averaged double figures in scoring once. I wasn't a fan of those Piston teams..
two words...Bill Lambeer.
As others feel, I don't want to disrespect JHD. So, I'll ask sincerely....who is going to pass him the ball so
that he can do floaters, etc. Whatever's going on with Kelly, I doubt it's because he was getting too many chances.

Thanks for allowing me to rant. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

not sure about the dennis rodman comparison

i keep hoping Cal finds another Roberson (Colorado?)

but I like the thoughts

I've also thought about how we can better use JHD offensively. Right now his role is to crash the offensive boards from the wing. He does that pretty well.

is that the best use of his skills?

not sure, but against a zone he is very unlikely to score except on a put back

I would rather put him in the middle of the zone defense and have him drive against the big. Problem is Sueing has the role and is much better at it (as a driver, finisher, mid-range shooter and passer). Maybe try JHD in the middle of the zone when Sueing is on the bench

Against a man, I'd like to see him cutting, and slashing to the basket. If he got caught a pass slashing he would be very hard to stop. He'd probably get fouled. Not sure if he could finish however

when he is on the wing and is guarded by a big, that is when I want him to drive (he has a weak handle against guards/SFs). I would tell him when ever he had a 4 or 5 on him, to drive hard. Not really looking for him to score like this, but I think he'll get fouled and he's improved from the FT line.

anyway, keep the ideas coming!

I think we're on the same wave length re: JHD. I'm just trying to dance with who we brought to the party. Someone referred to JHD transferring to football and playing WR....i say have him go to Track and Field and compete in the decathalon.

If he ran track he would still be on a basketball scholarship, and track is not a revenue sport.

If he played WR he would count as a football scholarship (even while still playing basketball), he would help at our greatest need in our most important revenue sport and he would free up a scholarship for men's basketball, our other revenue sport.

That and a nickel will get you a cup of jack squat. If he was Vanover's height, that might be enough, but he isn't and it's not.
