Unless he agrees to a meaningless extension that doesn't add a single dollar to our buyout for any additional years, we have to move forward with the contract he has now. We can't give him a real extension. We'll be right back here in 12 months.

Starting to feel like everyone knows an extension, with money on the line, is coming. Have a strong feeling the cost saving theory won't make sense when we fire him for the same amount next year.

Are we likely to be in any better position financially next year than we are now? Are we expecting some of that Levi Strauss public offering windfall to come our way? I admit to almost complete ignorance of the depth of Cal's financial woes but I'm gobsmacked by this decision. There may be some other DI coach less worthy of retention than ours but I'm at a loss to think of one.

Extension yes, Buy-out reduced by one year's salary..

They had to extend him. I told all of you that when you look at recruiting. However this half assed extension just adds fuel to the fire. I am not sure it isn't WORSE than not extending - cause again "That extension is a joke. Let me show you the twitter on it. See, everyone knows what they are doing is playing YOU. Come to Arizona - we pay both our coaches AND our players."

And WIAF. I respect that you played HS basketball. But I would submit that you are a bit behind about the real world of current college athletics. Those that follow understand just how much of a dumpster this is. I might suggest that if you are donating to this status quo you are not part of the solution but part of the problem. Sometimes tough love is needed. That is what the current group desperately needs rather than to be enabled.

Listen SCT, I'm more unhappy about the football move the offense coaches around decision than Jones. I can see the reasons for the Jones extension, but I don't like what is says. No one likes to see these decisions. We would rather have much better revenue sports.

But what do you do if your a Cal donor or fan? Stop donating or attending games? Support the people that make these decisions?

Add: you know that there are a bunch of posters on the board who blame the whole basketball fiasco on donors who are standing on the sidelines? Being a f-ing Cal donor is a total catch 22.

No! That will make him feel unappreciated, and we don't want that when college basketball powers come knocking. And they will. Trust me, they will.

This isn't a wild or bad idea imo. Maybe then JK will do more of his famous listening. Real hard listening.

BTW anyone want to guess how long we're going to let Diane Ninemire run the softball program into the ground in that $25M house they're building? The problem with Cal is mediocrity is so very expensive, but we're addicted.

Cal's athletic department funds are being diverted to the cost of security and damage cleanup now that under the tRump Free Speech Edict The Proud Boys, Klan, and Nazis will be speaking at Sproul Plaza thrice a month.

If there is an extension, it will not increase the buyout a single $.05. Zero financial cost extension if any

OK, but will there be a press conference and a more detailed write-up other than what appeared in the SF Chronicle this AM?

The scope of the analytics and hyperbole on this board the past week (months) has been difficult to sort.

Will be interesting to see what, as a purely practical matter, we're talking about here. I understand the "optics" promise even though I think it's overblown. But how an extension would work isn't clear. What's the difference between adding a few years years to his existing deal and giving him a 500 year deal if the buyout (both money and terms) is the same?

So, you're saying the extension is four cents . . . That's about fair based on current market forces!

I don't get the "optics" argument. It's not like recruits can't read these (and other) boards and know that the extension, if it's happening, is not "real" and is no guarantee that Jones is here for a year four. Grace's job will be to sell Cal and not Jones. And of course the unicorn practice facility.

Also, players and HS/AAU coaches are plainly aware that there's always turnover in the coaching ranks. Just a player knows a coach could let go, he also knows that coach could leave for another school as a promotion. If I were a player, I'd be much concerned about the latter.

From the looks of it maybe on the women's team.

I have a response to your first sentence above.

NO such addiction on my account. But you know, people will pay a lot of money to have a structure named after them. Much easier to raise capital funds than operating funds. But hey, we are an aquatics school!

Is that $25M required to match baseball facilities? Two sports with combined attendance near zero.

Not sure if you've been to Evans recently, but it's a dump. Whatever the women get, it'll be infinitely better than the baseball team.

Is there a reason softball and baseball can't share the same facility? That seems to work for men's and women's basketball. Then the Athletic Department could sell Evans back to the University.

Yes, I didn't think of that. I wonder if it would make sense for the NCAA to schedule one of softball and baseball in the fall and the other in the spring. It might be a lot cheaper to reconfigure one field twice a year than to maintain two separate fields with no spectators.

You can't really play one of these in the fall because you'd have the College World Series in December in the snow.

Does the season have to run 5 months?

If Grace can land any top-notch recruit while WJ is head coach, then Grace is one of the best recruiters of all time.
