How the heck did TT hit a homerun hire with him? What rock and lucky charm did they use to find him?

Cal should roll the dice and hire Nate Oats before someone else does... WSU picking up Smith.... Cal going any slower will get another Plan B coach

Hired the right mid-major guy I guess

They didn't have do any special research on him. He was an assistant under Bobby Knight at Tech for 10 years from 2001-2011.

Funny thing is that UNLV hired him and he reneged on the commitment when the TT job opened up.

Going with DeCuire would be similar for us. Not saying the results would be the same, of course (time would tell). But I wouldn't be angry if we went with TD. He's at least gone out to Montana and hasn't hurt his chances with how he's performed there. His chances are better now than 2 years ago with the consecutive NCAA bids. I guess not the most exciting hire, but I think he has a decent floor. Question is how high is his ceiling?

Chris Jans at New Mexico State fits a very similar profile to that of Beard's: lot of success at the JC level, a while as an assistant for Gregg Marshall and now doing extremely well at the mid-major level. He'd absolutely be someone for a school with an opening to consider. Except for the fact that he got fired from Bowling Green after one season for getting hammered at the CIT Tournament and grabbing a woman's behind in a bar (all captured on cell phone video). He'd probably be a much hotter name on the coaching market if that hadn't happened because his body of work as a coach is solid.

The grabbing incident makes him unhireable for us. Way worse than what Turner did (for me, anyway).

No doubt. Wasn't even remotely suggesting it.

Does anyone really expect us to make "an exciting hire"? I certainly don't although I suppose many would see Kidd as one. FWIW, I was excited by the Martin hire but ultimately disappointed as his tenure unraveled. Unhappily, I think we're in line for a hire in the category of "adequate".

A step up to "adequate" would be huge...

I don't care if I'm excited tomorrow. I care if I'm excited next year and the year after and the ten years after that.

Given our history, "adequate" is probably the best we can expect. The only coach we've had since Pete Newell that was better than "adequate" was Mike Montgomery.
