Tell her that your wallet is closed for all things Cal until they stop doing stupid stuff like this.

Because if you don't, then they will assume that they can keep selling you a **** product and charge you premium prices to support it.

Mark Fox won an average 24+ games in Nevada (9 years) and an average 20+ games in his 14 years as D-1 Head Coach. That is a pretty strong resume.

I have and will continue donating to Cal Athletics and all things Cal.

Go Bears!

P.S. Cal just repalced a coach who won an average of 8 games a year with a coach who won an average of 20+ games a year (250%+ improvement). That seems like a major step in the right direction to me.

P.S.S. OK, I, like most, would have been happier with DeCuire, but, now Fox is our guy and he seems ok to me.

The guy that Jim Knowlton hired has won an average of 18 games in the last 9 years as a power conference coach and has a losing record in conference.

That is a strong resume for a low to mid major. That is a crap resume for a power conference team that cares about winning.

Look around the internet. Everyone is laughing at us.

How many games a year did Turner, Smith and DeCuire won in a power conference in the last whatever years? Oh, they were not in a power conference. Do you ever wonder why? To compare apples to apples, Fox won an average of 24+ in a mid-major Conference.

The ceiling is set, and it's low. If he wasn't able to win at a school with way more money and support or any academic restrictions, it's unfathomable that he will do so here.

That's ridiculous. The normal route is mid major success to then getting a crack at a major conference job. Fox went through that route and proved to not be a good major conference head coach. DeCuire is in a different point in his career - he's at the success at a mid major part. Some guys who get promoted do well, some don't.

Here's a halfway decent analogy... You're an NBA general manager. You have the #1 pick in the draft. Someone calls you and offers you Adam Morrison in exchange for the #1 pick. Do you laugh, hang up the phone, and take Zion? Or do you say "well, Morrison did average 28ppg in college and sure he had middling production in the NBA but how much NBA production did Zion have"?

Unknown with good potential is MUCH better than known mediocrity if your goal is to win championships. Fox is a known mediocrity.

If we had hired him based on his Nevada resume, it looks a lot like the profile of a DeCuire or Turner. Reasonable risk to take for a hire if you decide you don't want to pay a premium for an established major conference coach.

His record at Georgia is 30 wins over .500 in nine years, which is not good for a major conference coach. He only made the tournament twice in nine years in a sport where 66 teams make the tournament every year.

He was not the best guy available that would have been willing to take the job. He's certainly a large upgrade over Wyking, but that's a low bar to clear.

The support is debatable. Georgia's commitment to basketball has mostly been like USC. But he still should have been able to make the tournament more than twice in nine years.

One consideration (that we heard in talking to folks close to the Georgia program when Fox was there) was the self-imposed limitation Fox placed on recruiting by playing things clean. The SEC and the region in which it recruits basketball players is not one that is known for success without cutting more than a few corners.

While the Pac-12 has its share of shady programs, by and large, most programs are not following the Arizona, Kansas path.

A quote from one of the best college hoops TV analysts on Fox, "What this guy did at GEORGIA is remarkable. GEORGIA! And without cheating. He'll kill it at Cal."

Okay, running a clean program in a P5 conference without cheating per SEC custom. Now this makes more sense.

I would have absolutely loved to have hired Fox when Georgia did. That is the kind of mid major coaching record you take a chance on when you are a program like Georgia or Cal. Sometimes the guy does great. Sometimes you find out he exceeded his level. Tough to know which coach will be which. We don't know what Turner and Decuire might do at the next level. We know what Fox did. That is like saying I'd rather have had Ryan Leaf because he was a top 2 pick who had played in NFL games than Aaron Rodgers as a rookie because he was a 20 something pick who hadn't played a game yet.

Tell her all you want. She'd be elated to know you hate this. You're not part of her primary constituency. In fact, you're probably the type of person she'd like to see disappear permanently.

What the hell does she care about the competitive side of college athletics, anyway? That part costs money. It makes money too, if done right, but she's too myopic to see that. It's participation that matters. This way, kids who wouldn't normally get a crack at Cal get scholarships and some nice physical exercise. The empty gym and sub-500 records are of no concern to her.

He started at UGA in 2009-10, right? Vandy finished even with or above UGA in the SEC in 5 out of 9 of Fox's seasons. Is Vandy a shadier program than UGA? Doubt it.

I don't think it's SEC culture that made Fox have a sub.500 conference record. I think it's that his peers were better teachers and recruiters than him.

In his 9 seasons at Georgia he achieved 20 wins only 4 times. Never advanced in the NCAA tournament. He had overall losing records 3 times and had an overall losing record in conference play. His record at Georgia was worse than Braun's at Cal (which we fired him for) and much worse than Martin's, who nobody here would hire again.

He is another defense oriented coach with a boring offense who cannot even make up for it with great recruiting. At least he is a nice guy. If he has some good West Coast recruiters on the staff he could be Braun II. Yay.

I am very disappointed with this hire. Read Wilner's column. I think he got it right. Why was Cal in such a rush to hire someone no other school wanted?

Can anytime win big time in college BB without cheating? How many NBA players have a college degree?

The evidence is pretty clear that today's top BB players have virtually no interest in getting an actual college degree. Seems to me that what Fox did at Georgia was pretty good.

And on that note, LOL at Calipari endorsing him when he cuts corners just as much as anyone else.

It would be funny how Cal trips all over themselves to talk about how we do it better and cleaner than everyone else, until you start listing the programs that appear to be just as clean, care just as much about academics, and win a hell of a lot more than Cal.

Bottom line, Cal doesn't care to compete, so why buy tickets? Why turn the channel on.

And for Bear19, why don't you ask what's wrong with OaktownBear instead? Or is it too easy to take potshots at me and you're afraid to debate him?
