Hopefully he can recruit. Cal has had 4 McD AA's in the last 5 years. I like to think that has something to do with the university and its location, and not just the coach and his style of play.

How many McD AA's did Braun bring in his 9 years again? Powe and? Who am I missing?

Wyking brought in zero.

Monty, is a great Hall of Fame coach, but got Bird mostly because he was a Legacy and a Cal fan his whole life. Multiple McD's passed on us with Monty as the coach. Lee came back as a grad transfer after he was gone and Rabb only showed interest after he was gone.

So 3 of the 4 were under Cuonzo. The location and university are great, but it takes the right coach too.

He was a poor recruiter at Georgia all things considered. Hopefully he has some good recruiters on his staff at Cal. He is personable enough.

A couple of things:

Marcus Lee was a transfer who attended Cal for 2 years, played 1, and I believe graduated from Cal. He should be considered a recruit. Also, the fact that Cal probably finished second for him, and other 5 star recruits despite Monty's poor recruiting efforts, Braun's poor win/loss record, Kuchen's poor win/loss record, etc. tends to prove the point that the university and its location puts Cal in the running for a lot of highly coveted recruits.

The fact that 3 of the last 4 McD AA's were from the East Bay tends to reinforce the point about the location advantage Cal has for recruiting.

If we expand the list to McD AA/Parade AA/5 stars, the list is much longer: Brown, Rabb, Bird, Lee, Domingo, Crabbe, Ubaka, Powe, Sampson, 'Reef, Gray, Fowlkes, Gardner, Kidd, Beeuwsaert, Taylor, Johnson, Pitts, Hays, and probably others that I can't remember. How many have Washington State, Oregon State, Utah, or Colorado had (the last 2 since joining the Pac)? Have any of them had any McD AA's ever?

The point being that recruiting to Cal has its relative advantages.

And the academic standards should not be as much of an excuse now that UCLA has moved ahead of Cal in the USN&WR rankings, which, of course, most of us would disagree with.

Like it or not he's our man now. Let's hope he can turn around his coaching career the way Tedford did at Fresno State. I see a similar story, successful years earlier on, mediocre coaching mid career, a time of break to reflect, then a fresh start. One advantage Fox has is he's still young and has energy. I decide to stay hopeful.

Welcome to Cal coach Fox!

Based on Mark Fox's recruiting history, we may need Michael J. in order to win at a high level.

Welcome Coach Fox!

I must say that, while I am not super wowed by this hire, it could certainly work in bringing Cal back to mediocrity rather than just plain irrelevant. With the right recruiters as assistants, we could have some really good years. If he can coach up talent, that is awesome, and if the re rioters can bring in good talent, that can make for a successful program.

Either way, I am cautiously optimistic.

And why not be "cautiously optimistic"?

We got Fox and let's hope we will see marked improvement...

Yeah. I'm done being confused/irritated and am ready for naive hope. Curious to see how recruiting fares. Nice to have you, Coach Fox!

Yah, focus on the positive. At least it's not another season of Jonesmageddon. He does have HC experience at P6 conference. Maybe he learned something from his previous jobs. And of course Cal could have hired Steve Lavin or gone for that weird "first female coach" experience that CGB was pushing, so Cal avoided the Three Mile Island scenario. Could have been a lot worse.
+1. What I want to understand is the kids he found at Reno. I saw at least one thing that said he has a good eye (and can develop) under appreciated talent. It would be interesting to hear about that.

That is the mark of many mid-major coaches. Then he gets them to play tough defense. Ben Braun was that at Eastern Michigan and brought that skill to Cal. Problem is, in today's world, with recruiting news all over the internet, other coaches can track your recruiting and poach your "finds."

Fox's record as a recruiter of top talent at Georgia was bad, considering the talent base. However, by all reports he is a really nice guy, so at least if his assistants bring in top recruits, he won't be a negative and should be able to close the deal.
A coach's record of recruiting the local talent base is not very relevant nowadays. It is how well do you recruit nationally and internationally that is important, and more likely to yield results. It would be nice to get the locals, but Cal hasn't done well landing them, under several coaches and many seasons. Even as far back as Newell, most of his best recruits were from Southern California and the Valley. Padgett perhaps did the best, landing great local stars Chenier, CJ, Truitt, and Coughran, but couldn't get them to play together.

I also think talent evaluation is an under-appreciated aspect of recruiting. Some coaches are great at finding talented players who for one reason or another have been flying under the radar.

That used to work and can work at an under the radar mid-major, but with today's recruiting news and rumors all over websites it makes it easier to poach another coach's finds. Braun had a reputation for good talent evaluation and finding players overseas so other schools would just offer the guys he offered. Stanford hired the former Bootleg publisher to review the recruiting services and they have a strategy of poaching the best under the radar recruits of their rivals, even if they will not likely be starters.

End of the day, you need to have coaches that can win recruiting battles.
