Could be that the last 4-5 seasons were not good recruiting classes, or it could be that the recruit ranking gurus missed on a larger number of recruits than usual, or it could be that coaching still makes a big difference. And defense is one thing that a good coach can teach his players to do well, even players who are not highly ranked.
