Why am I more interested in basketball than football?

I mean for football we have the possibility of a Top 10 nationally ranked D this fall, and all I am thinking about is whether we will hold onto Vanover or have a real chance at Baker the second time around. This is after two absolutely despicable seasons. Why is that?

Because hoops played beautifully (as the Warriors play it) is the best sport there is.

Hoops played the way that Cal has played it since Monty decided he didn't want to do the work anymore has been the opposite of that. Even when we were a #4 seed, we played an ugly style of ball.

True about basketball being an art form when done well. Now I don't think there is anything more grand than football at its height. For us that would be like Tennessee 2007 or Oregon 2006 or even UW in 1991 even during a loss.

KAB - You being up a fascinating point that I myself wonder about. The worse things get for Cal basketball, the more intrigued I get. Maybe it's because I was a manager for a year before giving up my spot for Roxy and I'm committed to Cal basketball for life. But I live in the Carolinas now, went to Duke for business school and, to the chagrin of many, remain an ardent Duke supporter in a variety of ways. I go to far more Duke games than Cal games, even attended the Coach K adult camp one year, almost always go to the ACC Tourney and the NCAA tourney games to see Duke play. And yet, I've never once commented on a Duke message board. Trust me when I say that the level of hardcore angst is the same on those boards as here just with different questions.

Yet, here I am everyday checking this place for some small scrap of good news. I often question why. But in the end, it's all part of being a fan even though it's woefully inadvisable and unhealthy at time. And true to form, the largely negative response to Fox makes me want to get behind him that much more.

You know when there is a major crash on the freeway - you slow down and look, don't you?

But there's always the possibility that it could be beautiful in the future, if a lot of things happen that almost certainly won't happen.

Yah but I don't follow up to see if they have insurance or which body shop they will go to.

Maybe you just like basketball a lot. It is a great sport. I lived in Indiana growing up, back when every HS, regardless of record, entered the State Tourney, no divisions. You would follow the team that beat your team, and so on, until everyone was cheering for one of the two teams that made the Championship Game.

Football was something you did while waiting for basketball to start.

Due to my son playing football at a small college, and coaching HS football now, I've become a football guy. But if Fox can get the team to at least a passable level, I'll be pulling hard for the MBB team.

One reason I like to watch basketball is that I can see every player and have an idea of what they're trying to do. In football, there's no way to know what defense was called, for example, or what responsibility the running back had in terms of protecting the passer. (Of course the fact I'm a basketball coach has something to do with it as well ...)

Also, you can see the players' faces in basketball, and get a much better sense of who they are, which makes the games more enjoyable.

Because 15-14 is much more compelling than 6-7.

Even in bad seats you're close enough to see the players. Numbers not needed for fans. Helmets not needed for players.

The game is faster. Very few huddles. No shutouts.

You're in and out in 2 hours, usually at a convenient time which doesn't blow a whole day.

In a good year you have to contend with 10K basketball fans trying to get to Haas rather than 50K football fans trying to overwhelm the city. In a bad year you can park and sit anywhere.

I'll never forget the last Cal game I went to. It was a slog up the hill. Legs got tired. It seemed that most of the fans were rooting for Ohio State. A sea of red everywhere. At that moment, the love affair died between me and Cal football.

That was the last non-Big Game I attended. What do you mean?!? It was awesome! The Ohio State Band there and everything... All I kept thinking was, could we get a rematch at a point in the future where we would have a much better team and our fans would show up, be loud and outnumber those Ohio yokels by 3-to1 or so. Of course, we win the game AND the ensuing Round Two in the Rose Bowl some 3-4 months after that.

What are ya gonna do, have me arrested? You're too late: It's 2019!

Seriously, if you're a Cal Football or Cal Basketball fan and you can't dream, what's left?

I played bball in high school and therefore knew enough to be dangerous when I watched, and tended to watch more basketball than football as a college student. I also know that Cal basketball has been unwatchable the last couple seasons. In fact the more I watch football, the more I have come to enjoy the game, and hope they find technology to address concussion and CTE issues. At this point, I'm not sure Pac 12 basketball is worth the effort to watch.

For me it has been because the situation in basketball is more volatile, with the possibility of new news every day. Who is staying? Who is leaving? Who might be coming? A few players one way or the other make a HUGE difference in basketball. Plus Fox is new to Cal so speculation is rampant.

Meanwhile football is in the lull between Spring and Fall camp so there is not that much to talk about.
