How can we lose a player to this college?

And in Justice's good bye message, not a single mention of cal community or cal coaches. Just something to the effect of "coaches along the way."

Clearly was not liking it here so best for both parties.
Give to Cal Legends!

Dear Fat: Duh!!! Ohio State supports football and basketball and Cal does not. Hasn't since the Barbarians sacked Rome. Until this changes, look for this situation to repeat itself . Vegas says this dynamic will not change in the near future. what do you know that Vegas doesn't know??if you are a cal fan it simply means that you are addicted to this dynamic. what is that great line? "it is what it is,"

Sueing was/is a good player, but he was a hybrid. too small to be a PF and he couldn't shoot well enough to be a SF. Addiction through subtraction. If you are not happy, you need to move on..

that should be 'addition." Sorry.

There was always is going to be turnover when the program is doing poorly. Add a new coaching staff, and you have more turnover. Reality can look unpleasant. I'm not sure what the problem with TOSU is supposed to be. They are an athletic powerhouse and certainly have a better basketball program currently. It is not Sueing ran off to a conference opponent. Sueing didn't like Cal, it is good for both parties to cut ties. I'm assuming after 2 years of college he has a better understanding of what college is a better fit. Cal is starting to see a lot of transfers in (as opposed to out) with football and some other sports as well. Nature of where college sports is headed. Men's basketball likely will lag until the program can prove it is credible.

I think Sueing is making a mistake by transferring to Ohio State. At Cal Sueing would be the feature scorer immediately and would get all the minutes (and shots) he could handle for the next two years. At Ohio State, that may not be the case. I have met Justice and he seems to be a fine young man, but, I think he is making the wrong decision.

Ohio State is indeed a fun school, an athletic powerhouse and the focus of the whole State of Ohio (I have been on the Ohio State campus many times and hanged around High Street several times going back to the Woody Hayes days). But, Sueing will have to sit out for one year and a lot can happen during that time. Among others, there is always a chance that Suring may get recruited over (remember Charlie Moore and his transferring to Kansas). For example, I recall a pretty good high school hybrid SF/PF from Akron was planning on attending Ohio State before he went directly from high school to the NBA (his name is LeBron).

As for Sueing's chances of playing in the NBA, I do not see that as a good possibility. Sueing is too small to play PF in the NBA and does not have the shooting skills/touch to play as SF in the NBA. If you doubt that, please check how many 3 pointers he has made the last two years on a Cal team that desperately needed scoring. To Sueing's credit, he was athletic enough in college to get to the basket for lay-ups, but, IMHO, he will not be athletic enough to do that in the NBA with regularity.

As for his academic desire of getting into a medical or dental school, obviously Cal would be a much better choice (unless he was not getting good grades at Cal which we do not know about). One thing is that it is a lot easier to get good grades at Ohio State than at Cal (specially for a Foitball or Basketball player).

Holtmann is a good coach.

Agree that Sueing could get recruited over there.

Seems like a stupid decision to me. If he was grad transferring then I would understand but to not get a Cal degree and have to sit out a year at a school where he'll probably get recruited over vs. a school where he would have been the star? Whatever. To each their own I guess.

Speculation: Perhaps Sueing did not think he could get along with Fox. The timing of his entry to the transfer portal suggests this.

Speculation: Perhaps Ohio State was the most attractive offer available. I haven't seen a list of offers.

Not speculation: We do know he made HM on the Pac-12 All-Academic team.

Ohio State >>> SDSU athletically, academically and reputation.

Wow, that's unfair. Look back at April 3 on twitter:

Not saying he was happy at Cal, but don't sh*t all over his decision. His latest announcement is about where he is going, not where he was coming from.

yes, that's true, but it was in southern cal close to home and he would have had a big role on the team

seems like many players transfer for primarily basketball reasons, and most seem to transfer closer to their roots

academics/reputation is a factor for many, but hard to really say how big a factor for any individual player

anyway, I'm sad to see him leave Cal as I think he's been our best player (when considering offense, defense and rebounding), and would have provided some veteran leadership. when we signed him, I thought he would be solid, but had my doubts due to limited athleisism and because he wasn't a good shooter. But he had a savvy game, and had a high hoops IQ.

if he went to a pac12 team, it would have been very hard for me to continue to root for him, but unless we play Ohio State I'll continue to follow his career and hope he does well

I don't think that this was primarily a basketball decision for Sueing, although that certainly factors in. By taking a redshirt transfer year, he can use it to get some of his tougher pre-med classes out of the way, and then spread his total pre-med academic load over five instead of four years. Ohio State has a hospital and medical school there on campus, and he can get to know people and likely have a preference on future admission. On the basketball front, he can play for a winning coach and team, even if does end up being minutes off of the bench, and will have some great college memories going forward.

I highly doubt this is the case. Very few high major players transfer for reasons that aren't primarily basketball-based.

Everyone has their reasons for doing things. Not all of those reasons are good.

I have serious doubts that a player who was above-average on one of the worst teams in the nation (all schools big and small and every conference) will have a better basketball career at a better program with more talent.

I hope for his sake that Sueing has other reasons for choosing Ohio State and isn't delusional about this leading him to the NBA, or even a more prominent role on a college BB team.

As far as Cal is concerned, I'm happy to have an extra schollie to build something for the longer term. I just hope Fox doesn't waste those extra schollies on desperation 2019 recruits and instead works on building a solid foundation.

Not sure I understand why people are underselling Sueing (other than sour grapes). He is a skilled player with decent athleticism. Similar to Boatwright, but further along as a soph. It wouldn't shock me if he develops better under a coaching staff that knows what they are doing.

Perhaps Ohio State basically just accepted him for medical school. That is what i would have tried to do if I were he.
All these kids dream of the NBA, but some of them are realistic. Perhaps Justice is realistic.

Nice angle. You're thinking two steps ahead on this, but I wonder if you're the only one.

I'd love to have Sueing back. Good player, quality guy.

But he's taking on some pretty serious risk by upping the level of competition. He's fantastic at reading defenses and feeling out contact to get to the line. Best on the team by far. But he gets bottled up by athletic wing defenders because of his low release and flat-footed jumper. Overall, his eFG last year was 48.1% which is a bit below average. Against top 100 teams, it declined to 44.7% which is below average. Against top 50 teams, it was 38.5% which is significantly below average. He's gonna be up a lot of top 50 and top 100 teams with long, athletic defenders in the Big 10. That's gonna be a challenge for him.

But again, I'd still love to have him back.

All good points, but remember he was being asked to lead a team of frosh and sophs as a soph. That was a lot to ask from a 4-year type level of player.

He won't be anyone's defensive focus as a role player in the Big Ten though, so it might be easier in some ways.

2 years of losing probably did it. Or maybe he didn't like the player introductions.
