It seems like Fox is taking a very measured, slow approach to this rebuild. It is a very different feel than with Jones. It seemed like Jones was trying to make a splash and get some hype going for program, and fell flat on his face in doing so. Fox seems like he is not in any hurry to get the program up to speed. He will have at least 4 scholarships for 2020, which seems like a good thing, because that class is better than the 2019 class.

My hope is that the coaching will get these guys on better footing and then there will actually be something to build from.

Fox has been a head coach for a while, so not only has experience and knowledge about what he wants to do, but confidence as well. Jones had none of that. Which is why it is often (but not always) best to get HEAD coaching experience before getting to the top level league.

Knowing what to do, knowing how to do it, knowing what to do when it goes sideways and doing it with confidence all come with experience. I'm glad we have moved on from Jones. But Cal MBB, two years ago, was not the right starting point for him (or any coach with no experience). I actually thought he was growing as a head coach and think he can do well in the future at a different level. I wish him well.

I completely agree with you. He was just way over his head.

Always funny when Cal fans interpret lack of success as a plan. I don't think being in last place next season will make it easier to fill those scholarships.

I'm sure Fox has a plan. I don't know what it is. You don't know what it is. It appears as if he has decided not to pursue a lot of guys in 2019. I am guessing that he is going to be heavily pursuing guys in 2020 instead. I am not sure where I said failure would lead to success. Of course being last place makes things harder. Please don't put words in my mouth. If you read my response on the Kany was important for the pprogram, you would see that yay, we beat out Washington State and super depleted Nevada for the 300th ish best senior.

Perhaps it is more a function of Fox not believing that taking another recruit or two from the remains of the recruiting pool for this class would provide his new program with a greater opportunity of success. Obviously, there is a lot of risk-reward analysis to be contemplated, but I strongly doubt there are many coaches who subscribe to a theory whereby less success on the court leads to greater success in recruiting.

How much is there to even get out of 2019 at this point? Realistically you're talking about wasting scholarships on longshots or warm bodies vs. saving them for a point where you've had time to develop some relationships with better players. Fox's approach makes sense to me. I'd prefer not to be in the position of having to run off players who never belonged to begin with, like the last fiasco.

I'm happy we're not scrambling for players who don't belong in the Pac-12. It's possible we're pursuing a grad transfer or two, if so we might not find out for a while. I'd love to get a grad transfer SG like Grant Mullins. If not the upcoming season might be brutal but either way we'll have time to go after better 2020 players.
parentswerebears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Fox has made it pretty clear that a grad transfer is unlikely. I think what we see now is what we get next year. Maybe another player?

As we all now know (if we didn't already), it's good that he's not using up the scholarships on marginal players.

On the other hand, I bet he'd LIKE to retain all of our best players and attract the top one-year grad transfers, but he's just struggling to do so.

Quoting you "he is not in any hurry to get the program up to speed" and "he has decided not to pursue a lot of guys in 2019." Kind of sounds like a plan to me. I have lots of hope. With nine scholarship players Cal should EASILY get 5 wins (total) and then the recruits will be banging down the doors in 2020. I like it.

I am sure that you are right that he has decided that taking a lower level recruit or two would not help the program. However, being forced to take things slowly is not to his credit.

Not sure I disagree with you with respect to his failure to retain kids that were on the roster when he took the HC position at Cal, though we are firmly in an era where a relatively large percentage of kids now transfer for literally all kinds of reasons (coaching change being just one). I don't think his inability to keep returning guys from last year's team is to his credit, but this is frequently how the movie plays out these days.

Hopefully Fox will have established some semblance of an improved product by the time the next recruiting class signing period arrives, to recruit both high school kids and transfer players into a program for which such players can envision success on the court to go with high academics.

I'm not holding my breath, but that is certainly the hope for a veteran coach. We'll see how this plays out, but I don't get the sense next year's team is going to be hugely successful on the court. Unfortunately, I think this will be a slow rebuild.

If Fox re-recruited just 2 of McNeil, Sueing or Vannover and held on to Smith this wouldn't be a rebuild. I fear his lackluster recruiting reputation held suit in this regard. If he brings back the those guys, and he's a significant improvement over Wyking as a coach, we could have challenged for a .500 record.

Seems like a good year to take a transfer that has to sit upcoming season

He could practice, learn the system, and not lock up a scholarship since we will have some unused

Grad transfer would be even better since otherwise another ride goes unused

WSU lost 5 players who did mot want to play for the Great Kyle Smith. Players at a losing program sometimes decide a new coach wont make any difference. If they have to learn a new system the decide they might as well go to a place that
Might have a hope of getting into the ncaa tourney.

Every time there is a coaching change , players leave. They have no allegiance to any school and care little about the academics.

I dont hold Fox responsible. . The players that left are losers and will not help other programs much.

Also, interesting worldview: the unpaid talent are "losers" when they decide to leave for a better situation, but the guy in charge, with the multi-million dollar guaranteed contract, bears no responsibility for their exits.

Funny stuff.

I am simply saying they were on a losing team. Have nothing personal against them. The coach was the main problem. Had the players played better maybe the record would have been better.

You have often mentioned bad body language by the players. I would assume they might have been a factor in how they played

If you think I was attacking the players, then I apologize. I wasn't. Just don't think they were very good.Wyking kept searching for a system that would work and for the most part was not successful.

Suing and McNiel likely were gone no matter what decision Knowlton made. My best to McNeil and what he believes will be a NBA career as a point guard. My sense is Sueing, as a former Mater Dei player, was simply dissatisfied with the lack of progress in the program, and was going to move to a better situation, which he did at TOSU. Proven coach, good program, etc. He may get recruited over, but he is with a winning program and will have the opportunity to prove himself.

I'm not sure what the situation was with Vanover. Seemed he was progressing. Going back home may reflect a lot of things that may not be coaching staff related.

Not sure what happened with Smith.

The point is that there is a lot of turnover any time there is a coaching change, the program was a hot mess and not attractive to a savior coach, and the transfers may have just wanted out the awful situation which is Cal basketball, regardless of coaching. This is a reload, but I think the program can become not terrible with some foreign player recruiting, a good transfer and maybe some coaching-up. Yes, not terrible is progress.

Ah----I get it. Please become a season-ticket holder. I promise the team will not be terrible. This team went 3-15 in conference play last year and they just lost their three best shooters. Good luck with not being terrible. I'm sorry to be so sarcastic. If you can't shoot, you "may not be terrible", but last place in the pac-12 is a real possibility.

Nevada is no longer depleted. When Musselman left, the entire team, either went into the transfer portal or cancelled their LOI. So Alford started with an empty cupboard. Since then he has convinced 4 of the best portal players to come back. The only one still out there is Jordan Brown who has decided to wait until the last minute to make a decision, Nobody knows what it is. He has also signed 4 players incl one who has to redshirt a year. If Brown comes back, Nevada will be one of the favorites to win the MWC. Big difference in attitude to Cal and its "slow walking" approach.

It started with the Nevada AD who is an aggressive, young guy. He did not just turn it over to a recruiting firm. He went out and signed Alford to a 10 year contract.. The University has decided it wants to continue what Musselman started. I am not convinced Cal has any such resolve.

Dear Alki: Cal fully deserves the disdain from cognizant posters. Please see thge last 60 years of Cal football and basketball. One day Cal may not deserve any disdain. We shall see. but, that day has not arrived. In the immortal words of Dennis Green, "you are who everybody says you are." Caltag simply said that Nevada Reno cares deeply about sports. What he said was factually true. he also has said, many times, that Cal does not really care about sports. Also, factually true. I know it hurts. it hurts me too. I am learning to cope.

I am disappointed every day that my parents went to Cal, that Jason Kidd and company gave me false hope, that Montgomery brought hope back that hooked me, and that I got onto this website. If even one of those things hadn't happened, I might actually be a fan of a winning program rather than Cal. Also, hope is the most important attribute of a Cal fan. And delusions.
