I grew up near Reno. It is one of the ****tiest places you could possibly think of in the US. If you are going there to play basketball, you can EASILY focus just on that, because there's nothing else to do there.

You could get divorced or married there quick as a wink. You used to be able to gamble there, but the last time I was there, there were almost no tables open, only slots. And the wind, oh, the wind. Does it ever stop?

You guys need to lay off the Reno bashing. Locals don't go downtown to gamble because this isa lot to do of those interested in certain activities. One of which is to drive to the lake in 45 minutes and not have any traffic jams or complete stoppage... One of the reasons we don't go to nearly as many Cal games is that fighting our way thru the Davis Causeway traffic jam adds hours to the trip in both directions.

I could go on but I think it would be a waste of time. I do know my stress level has gone down like going off a cliff.

I will add that the UNR doesn't impress me very much but the locals support it to a greater extent than furd fans do their school and yes, Cal fans recently.

I stand by my opinion of Reno.

This is my issue. This is a Cal board. As a Cal board there are many, many people that have chosen this area as their home. They like it. There are a handful of people who choose to portray Berkeley or SF, or the Bay Area as shyte holes. Nobody asked them. It is rude. It is also objectively true that this is a very desirable area whether a specific person finds it desirable or not. Your Nevada friend has been consistent in his dumping on all things Cal and Bay Area because he has apparently found his bliss and he wants everyone on board. He needs to just enjoy where he is, talk to his Nevada friends about how lucky he and they are, and not dump on his old home to people who still find it an enjoyable place. If he wants to root for Nevada, that is his business. He doesn't need to do it here.

I get deciding the urban area has become too stressful. I get if it is no longer what a person remembers from when they were young. You know what? By and large a place is what its residents want it to be. If that is no longer where someone wants to be, go to a place that makes one happy. Don't dump on the people that still live there.

I try not to respond in kind, not because I give a damn what the other person thinks, because they deserve it. But you don't deserve it.

Last fall I spent a week at South Lake Tahoe to get away from the smoke of the California fires. Since I was close I drove to Carson City and on to Reno. FWIW I don't really like the high, dry climate but I did find some charm in Carson City. Not so much in Reno, but I only spent half a day there and certainly didn't see everything. I'm happy that we have so much variety over relatively short distances, there should be something within a few hundred miles of Berkeley which would work for any particular taste.

Careful OaktownBear. Don't be putting words in/out of my mouth. I don't badmouth Berkeley, SF or the BayArea. For my wife and I, we had enough and decided to move up here with family on our way to New Mexico - never made it there.

We enjoy the Bay Area and get there every so often. Just recently, I earned serious brownie points by taking my wife to Annie's Annuals in Richmond for their spring open house, then across to Marin for lunch and then down to Half Moon Bay to walk the cliffs/beach and spend the night. Note extra points for carrying plants in the car for the 2 days!

Again I would caution people to judge the area by downtown Reno. That is a waste land!

I apologize for the bash. It was meant to be a tease. I actually like Reno. It's been a couple of years since I was there. The golf is good, and the Lake is oh so close, and Virginia City is closer, which has the country's best Radio museum, among other things. I have two good memories. The first was a trip to attend a seminar for inventors given in Reno by the US Dept of Commerce, covering all aspects of the inventing profession. I met the guy who invented the FAX, an old gentleman in a wheelchair, who held 30 some patents. He was broke, having sold each of his inventions to pay for the next one. Also met the guy who invented asphalt. Then I went to do a little gambling and found a roulette wheel that may have been a little off kilter, as it paid off for me so many times in an hour or two. I came back the next day, and I could not win with same bets. They had changed the wheel, I'm sure. I still went home with $2K in my pocket, for the only time I ever gambled in Reno.

The second trip was to see an exhibition golf match at Hidden Valley CC, between Johnny Miller when he was #1 on the PGA tour and Sam Snead, who was about 62 years old then. On the first hole, Snead drove into the rough, and I went down to where the ball was, but could not see it, as the grass was so thick. Snead took out a 2 or 3 wood, and I thought he was nuts. He took the slowest golf swing I ever saw, and the ball just exploded out of the heavy grass, and landed 260 yards away, on the front edge of the green. Later, another drive landed on a cart path, hardpan. Instead of taking drop, he played a perfect 9-iron, picked it clean, and it landed about 8 feet from the pin. He ended up losing by one or two shots to Miller, but it was a match I won't forget.

There's this burger counter located at the rear of one of the casinos called Awful Awful. Great burgers and they come with a pound of fries. First stop I make when I'm in Reno. Also like the El Dorado Buffet.

You know what city kicks ass? Minot, ND. There's this trailer park near the Rez that is lovely when the temp hits freezing.

I know free speech is tiresome, annoying and sometimes problematic. It is, however, so much better than the alternative. The sooner Cal students, faculty, regents and bloggers understand and savor the first amendment, the greater the probability we will return to something approaching normality. People are not awful for harboring different or problematic opinions....they are simply exercising their first amendment rights..As Joe Pesci would say, Oh---what a concept!!!!!!!

Free Speech gives you the right to be a rude arrogant jackass. It doesn't make it a requirement. If you go into somebody's house and tell them it is a shytehole, you are exercising free speech and being very rude. I guess being old enough to shave didn't teach you that.

I really, really didn't want to get sucked into the OT blather, but it is SOOOOO slow and the BBall news is SOOOOO bleak, I can't help myself.

But OTB, gets my post of the day award!. I would add, that rational people have a civic responsibility to shout down the rude ****s and expose their agendas for what they are. OTB has done his job, a few more of us probably need to do the same and call out the jackasses who don't know what rationale discourse is.

As for HTP, I agree with his sentiment above, but by naming a narrow constituency - as if they are the ONLY ones, he exposes himself.

My agenda is to promote free speech and to re-focus on thge importance of the first amendment. For thge past few decades, Cal has had a well-documented history of either denying free speech to others who do not support the prevailing liberal/far left political culture on campus or actually assaulting people who have visited the campus. Please see the riots, burnings, and physical assaults which have become routine on this campus. The great irony, of course, is that Cal was heralded as the champion of free speech back in the days of drugs, rock and roll and tye-dyed tee shirts. If men were angels and charming ( like Oak and Bleached) we would not need protections like thge first amendment. But, of course, very few of us can aspire to sainthood like the aforementioned purveyors of goodness, decency, tolerance and gentility of these beauties. Consequently, our founding fathers felt that free speech alone was the cornerstone of our democracy and the framework upon which other rights could be built. Pity that so many cannot/will not accept this cornerstone. Want to know how to spot the intolerant???Easy...Just look for the swearing and name-calling and the personal vitriol emanating from those who have let their emotions gain the upper hand from their better angels. When you say CAL, do mean the university, the student body, Berkeley or who. Certainly, the University does not have a policy of curtailing free speech except as necessary for public safety.

If that is what you like, South Lake Tahoe (Nevada side) and the rest of Northern Nevada have the same "advantages" but are a bit more picturesque than Reno.

Whew! I thought I would get some sage advice about the "rebuild". Wrong. Where did this topic go astray? Please, some thoughts from you wizards on the rebuild.

First you set the foundation. New coach. Then you evaluate all the players and put them in a position to be successful. Not east but doable

I moved away from the Bay Area into the Sierras, and my stress level is down as well. I like the mountains and trees and open space and lack of traffic. But I still don't want to read anything at all about UNR sports here, unless Cal is playing them. This board is supposed to be about Cal sports. My personal opinion of Reno, which I visit roughly twice a month, is not the same as yours but I can respect that some folks like it. I have friends who live there and I get it - different strokes. Doesn't mean that I want to read about Montreaux, or Steve Alford, or Musselman, or Jordan Carolyn when I come here to check on Cal basketball discussion.

It'll be interesting to see how much flexibility Fox has regarding personnel vs. system. He hasn't had a lot of opportunity to recruit to his system yet, so balancing the art of putting his current players in positions to succeed while also changing the culture and the system will be the first test imo.

How do you like living in the Sierra? We are starting to get thinking about retirement and cashing out on that sweet SoCal home equity. Problem is that Reno still isn't that nice. South between it and Carson pretty nice but rural. I am not sure about living in the foothills. Feel free to PM me.

How much time to you spend on campus? serious question. My office is a block from campus. I'm on campus every day. Haven't seen a riot yet. I do walk by the CAL republicans info booth on sprout regularly. Never seen an incident. I also walk by the crazies shouting their religious believes over a meg phone Again, no issues. They are left alone to say their peace. You're spreading misinformation in order to bash the institution you supposedly care about. seems you care more about being right than CAL.
