Other coaches, as far as I know, as well as media relations both for the Athletic Department and the University too often spout the ridiculous #1 public university mantra (which is now misleading given the most recent US News rankings). Why buy into rankings skewed against public institutions, as if parents or students care whether they go to a public or private school--they want the best school public or private.

translation: yes, UCLA beat us 75-3, but our GPA is higher than theirs..We should all be proud of that. right.

What you say is true, of course, but I've had at least two employers tell me the reason they hired me was because I graduated from Cal. It does open some doors.

Maybe they are a sub-type of lie. Webster says a white lie is "a lie about a small or unimportant matter that someone tells to avoid hurting another person,"

Like telling a friend who invites you to a Cal basketball game last season under Wyking Jones that "I'd like to go, but my wife's mother is coming to dinner."
