Lots of credit being given to coach Fox (and shade given to Wyking Jones), and much of it is deserved, but I think it's being taken a bit too far.

We were going to be better this year just based on player experience, anyway.

Last year's minutes distribution
Freshmen 35%
Sophomores 48%
Junior 17%

This year's minutes distribution
Freshmen 18%
Sophomores 33%
Junior 17%
Seniors 32%

5th Year Seniors
36 min. South
28 min. Austin

Juniors
34 min. Anticevich
0 min. Harris-Dyson

Sophomores
31 min. Bradley
23 min. Kelly
12 min. Gordon
0 min. Erving

Freshmen
22 min. Brown
11 min. Thiemann
3 min. Klonaras
0 min. Thorpe
0 min. Kuany

For the current group, 2021-22 looks like their best season.
If recruiting improves after this year's progress, then we can do even better for 2022-23 with our current freshmen leading the way as seniors.

Last Year
Seniors (none)

Junior
34.4 Austin

Sophomores
34.5 mpg. Sueing
32.6 mpg. McNeill
16.0 mpg. Harris-Dyson
11.7 mpg. Anticevich

Freshmen
28.4 mpg. Bradley
23.0 mpg. Kelly
17.5 mpg. Vanover

Minutes by position from last night:

1
Brown 22
Austin 18

2
South 30 (our best player on both ends, IMO, got the most minutes)
Austin 10 (or was Brown playing the 2 when both were in?)

3
Bradley 31
South 6
Klonaras 3
Harris-Dyson 0 (When JHD comes back, Bradley probably spends some time as a 2, meaning fewer minutes for Austin or Brown.)

4
Anticevich 34 (2nd most minutes because we're weakest in the post at this point)
Gordon 6 (I think Gordon will take more of Anticevich's minutes as the season progresses.)
Kuany 0 (Kuany may take some too.)

5
Kelly 23
Thiemann 11
Gordon 6 (more total minutes than Lars)
Thorpe 0

Grant was more than worthy to get more minutes last year on a team that lost 16 in a row but Wyking didn't see it that way.

with Cal up by 16 and one minute left, Fox still had his starting five in the game. And, we had possession. C'm0n, Coach..fl;ood the court with the walk-ons and we still win by double digits..

Interesting breakdown. One thing you didn't take into consideration is the quality of the players lost. You can be more experienced and less talented. We did lose Sueing who was arguably the best player last year.

One correction: Not sure how South's 30 minutes was the most and Anticevich's 34 was 2nd most (and Bradley's 31 was also less???).

South's minutes are split between two positions. 30 minutes at the 2 and 6 minutes at the 3.

Suing, McNeill and Vanover were probably the most attractive prospects for other schools, based on body types and athletic ability. All would have been big contributors this year, and they should good for Ohio St., SMU and Arkansas after this redshirt year.

I still think our lineup now is better than last years, though, given how inexperienced that club was and how much improvement our remaining guys have made over the summer. South, Theimann and Brown are very good replacements for the three who left.

Sueing was our best finisher on the fast break and a floor leader, but he wasn't a good enough outside shooter for the number of shots he took (43.2%, 30.2%, 78.2%).

98% of the time I'd be with you. But given the dumpster fire Fox inherited, I'd understand that he wants to give his rotation players as many reps as possible in live game conditions.

But I sure hope there will be some more blowouts in our favor in the weeks ahead, where the walk-ons will get to play....

Agreed. New coach, new system, mostly a team that hasn't played together before. The starters need as much game experience playing together as possible. We play Duke in a few weeks...
