Man, this thread is weird. A candidate for OT?

The following has multiple layers (even a CAL reference)

That guitar playing (AND the singing) is F_ckin' AMAZINGLY Subtle, and refined. It has the awfully weird quality of, at the same time, (a) using licks and phrases that have been used millions of times, but (b) making them aesthetically, emotionally and musically meaningful for the first time ever, and with a deepness that one would not have thought possible.

The more I listen to monty, the more I realize he would have been Cal's greatest coach ever if only we had the desire/intelligence to snatch him up after his stint at Montana. He genuinely seems to like Fox. He says that he has seen many Cal practices, and he is amazed and gratified at the improvement under the current leadership. In other words, Cal could have done a lot worse under the circumstances. He is especially pleased with Brown, the freshman PG. He admits that Brown '"can't shoot, but who cares--he is strong, athletic, a tenacious defender and its always looking to pass the ball. "
You're saying Monty said Brown can't shoot? At 67% from 3 and 47% overall? I highly doubt it.

Sounds like the same "Bradley can't shoot" comments out of high school that also didn't come from Monty.

One minor correction: I wouldn't have called Domingo a marginal player (when he was signed). He was a top recruit out of hs and went to Duke.
I remember reading that Domingo enrolled at Georgetown at age 17 after finishing high school in just 3 years. He was highly-rated in high school but didn't play well at Georgetown.

Yup. And I believe Frid was a walk-on.

Yes, Frid was a 7''1" walk on with the great highlight tape that transferred to CS LA. He's playing professionally in Israel now.

I believe that I heard that as well on the pac-12 telecast.

Did he say something like, at this point, shooting isn't the main strength of his game? Because clearly he can shoot.

Very interesting. Of course, Oakland wasn't far behind during that era: Bill Russell, Paul Silas, Joe Ellis, etc.
Also K.C. Jones came out of San Francisco (Commerce High).

Thanks for the correction. Of course, Georgetown. Dementia setting in...

So I think the recruiting gurus may have been mislead by watching Domingo in high school or looking at his statistics, and maybe didn't consider the level of competition he faced in high school. San Francisco high school ball is now where near what it once was, and that is tragic.
AAU and other non official HS stuff has more bearing on rankings. Domingo had that 5 star look; long, athletic, moved well, had (at least by reputation) a good shot. He was pretty bad in college but at least the physical attributes made him playable on defense.

Brown was a 22% three shooter in high school. Looks like he has been working on his shot he has potential. as a shooter.

So are you saying 67% from 3 is a 4 game anomaly and his % will go down into the 20's or lower, which is he can't shoot territory or exasperated that I questioned a supposed statement by Monty that doesn't make sense?

He's shooting really well so far so I'm surprised Monty would say he can't shoot.

He's attempted 6 3 point shots. Coming to any conclusion about someone's ability from 6 shots, good or bad, is dumb. My personal guess at this point is that he's well ahead of a guy like JHD as a shooter, but he probably needs some refinement.

FWIW, his two point shooting percentage is 36.4% so far.

ESPN has him at 67% from 3 and 47% overall so that's what I was citing. And I'm not claiming that 4 games equates to a player's full abilities, just that with where he's at now, it's weird for an announcer to say he can't shoot, especially someone with credentials like Monty -if he did indeed say that.

They have questioned how well he can shoot. It'd be nice given that we've watched the telecasts and you haven't if you would take that on faith and stop implying that he didn't because it doesn't jive with your 6 shot opinion.

Pigskin: his two point shooting percentage is 36.4%
Moraga: 67% from 3 and 47% overall

You are, of course, both correct.

I wasn't implyiing that he was wrong - just as additional data to assess Brown's shooting ability with the limited amount that we've seen him so far.

The other piece of what Monty has been saying is that regardless of Brown's shooting ability, he does a lot of other good things out there, which I agree with. But you'd still like your guards to be credible threats from distance to keep the floor spread.

I love Brown's energy and athleticism on both ends of the court.

At this point, he doesn't have the look of a natural shooter like Bradley so I've been pleasantly surprised at his accuracy so far.

I wasn't implying that you were. Just stating a fact.

FWIW: This is a very good discussion about a dynamic young player.

I believe Monty made his statement before the game that Brown went 3 for 3 on 3's.....His shot is a work in progress from what I've seen....I hope he continues to shoot this well but that may be a bit too much to expect...

He made one last night that looked good. On the other hand, my least favorite play happened. 2 seconds left and a pass to Dyson well beyond the three point line. It did not hit the rim. Sigh. Somebody please teach this guybhow to shoot.how about set shot? Much easier.
