Well, this is a public forum that appears to be sanctioned by a publicly funded university. And, although I doubt it, Civil Bear could be a university or other government official seeking to squelch Ursa's free speech rights.

Actually, the forum has no direct connection to the university as far as I can see. And I agree that invoking the 1st amendment is kind of irrelevant, here.

Dear Hell, you may want to reeducate yourself on the First Amendment. Even if we humor the silly notion that the First Amendment protects free speech on a privately owned sports board, I never remotely suggested Ursa didn't have a right to his observation. And I would certainly be within my rights to my correct yet sarcastic opinion that his post was divisive. Heck, I'll even go out on a limb and assume I am within my rights to tell you to follow the advice of Dan Baird.

Congrats on the baby! A little newborn story (as it relates to Cal Basketball, OF COURSE)...

My son is now 11. We took him to the Cal/Furd game when he was about 3 mos. Cal won in OT, IIRC (you can check the records... Feb or March, 2009). Didn't know what to expect, but he was great, in our arms. The game got louder and louder, until it was REALLY loud, towards the end, at which time I looked down... and he had fallen asleep.

As he got bigger, though, and to this day to some extent, he is overly sensitive to loud noises. I hope it wasn't because of that game!

Dear Civil: Let me go out on a limb and assume you know a lot about your engineering speciality. But, your bedside manner is hovering in the Cminus category ( I'm being generous here) "divisive" is linked to malicious intent. without the latter, it is specious to invoke the former. The point made by UM was 100% factual as well as being fair. ( sometimes the two are separate--sometimes not) Forget the "first amendment" silliness--focus on what he said--then focus on what you said--let me go out on a limb and assume that engineering majors can detect the boundaries & nuances involved--then again---maybe not.

I think you misinterpret sincerity for sarcasm. I hold no such opinion, hence I will decline to argue one. Though I can see how it could be interpreted as divisive. You can't?

So last night was arguably the best Cal basketball game in 3 years, and our dedicated negabears: fat_slice and m2bear were no where to be found. Not a single post. OTOH 6 gleeful snarky posts between them on the UDub thread, including fat's call to fire coach Fox and his statement that we were the worst team in the Pac-12 "by a large margin." If we beat Utah, I assume again they will have zero to say, but if we don't, expect a rash of how terrible Cal is posts.

The Eiger Sanction was very slow, and Clint Eastwood was miscast. Not a Ludlum fan, but the book was better than the film.
