He got injured, and basically got recruited over.

I hope things work out well for Gordon. Dealing with an injury like his must be tough.

Good luck to Jacobi. Transfers are always part of the deal, especially when a regime change occurs.

The roster for next season currently has:

1 - J. Brown
2 - M. Bradley / J. Celestine
3 - J. Harris-Dyson / D. Klonaras / M. Bowser
4 - G. Anticevich / D. Thorpe / K. Kuany
5 - A. Kelly / L. Thiemann

JHD is a question mark to return, obviously. But assuming he stays, there's 2 rides left for next season. A PG is an obvious need and basically getting a really good player that can play right away (regardless of position) is another obvious need.

The best thing about a transfer like this (to the extent that there is a best thing) is that it's an amicable parting of the ways. We all wish the young man well, going forward, and he says, "Go Bears!"

There were too many factors working against him here:
- the injury
- maybe he wasn't going to be that good at this level anyway
- he's from out of state and the Texas guy that recruited him (Walker?) is gone
- coaching change

Too bad he won't get the Cal degree, but I hope he does well in hoops, at his next college and in life. Good young man!

Obviously not a surprise but it always bums me out a little when someone's Cal experience doesn't turn out as they hoped. Gordon was the second most highly recruited guy on the team after Bradley and the serious injury obviously changed his trajectory. I hope Fox uses the additional scholarship to make this a net positive and I agree with Tsuba that even though we need shooters and a PG, I'll take a player at ANY position that offers a improvement over what we have currently. Still think we may get another two slots to become available.

Gordon was the player I was most excited to see out of his recruiting class. But, his injuries meant that we never got to see what he could do.

I wish him health and recovery and a great college career - except when and if his new team plays the Bears.
HoopDreams

his injury derailed him, and that must be so tough for Gordon as he has so much talent. Just couldn't showcase him because he never recovered his explosiveness.

Still he adjusted, and was a good 3 point shooter, and played tough in the paint

His farewell tweet was also as gracious as they come

high character guy and good teammate

good luck to him

First of all, best of luck to Jacobi. Most likely based on information , his injury health never really recovered to 100%.

Not to be insensitive, but not only does one hope this works well for Jacobi, the other positive coming from this is an additional recruiting spot for the coach. With a team overstocked with "wing players" I'm really hoping that the 2 current openings go to a true point guard and a true center. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Completely agree with the needs. To take a step forward, to me, we HAVE TO get a player who can play right away and make a valuable contribution!!!

It sounds like you are not expecting major improvement, or any significant improvement over the off-season from these players. My experience has been that many players, maybe most players make some improvements after their first season, although many make the big jump after two years, if they do improve. Big men take longer, in general, to improve, and we have a lot of very young big men. Kelly still can not play more than 20-25 minutes, so if he can not improve this, Thiemann and Thorpe will need to improve enough to be and effective replacement for Kelly.

I have liked Kuany not for the 4 but for the 3, or small forward position. He has been coming along slowly, but he could make a big jump this summer. He can shoot, handle the ball, and can learn a lot over the summer with coaching. Very athletic. Thorpe has been steadily improving, but needs some offense, and also become a solid man defender to be able to stay on the floor for extended minutes. Theimann has been discussed ad infinitum, and I expect some improvement from him over summer, but how much is a question.

The crucial thing to ensure we are as good as last season is to get a point guard. A Frankie Ferrari. I'm not sure what we will look like with Brown running the offense for 35 minutes, so it should be someone at least as good as he is this season, and hopefully better. And of course, we need to at least replace what South gave us, which will not be as difficult to do as finding a PG who can play right away.

I don't see JHD staying, but even if he does, he is injury prone, and can only play for defensive reasons, which is a good thing to have, but small forward or shooting guard are scoring positions, and we need someone who can score there, because we are not scoring enough points per game as a team.

So I agree with you that we need someone who can play right away, and I'm hoping that Kuany is the guy for small forward position, and that we find a PG who can play right away, either a great distibutor, or a good scorer and defender, at least. If Kuany doesn't improve enough, then we'll need a SF who can play right away, or we'll be stuck with using Bradley out of position there again, and getting another good shooting guard. I'd also like us to get another big, a center, if JHD decides to leave, but I'm satisfied waiting to see if the current bigs, Kelly, Anticevich, Thorpe, and Thiemann can be the primary players at C and PF for next season.

I basically agree; I would add a couple of points:

I think Brown is likely to make a significant jump. He was much more under control in the latter part of the season and is already a plus defender. His quickness and speed can make him a force penetrating and dishing. He needs to develop a shot--not necessarily a 3, but a reliable mid-range J.

I am cautiously hopeful that the two recruits we have signed--both wings--can carry some of the load at the small forward position. Both are supposedly plus shooters, but don't know how their game will translate to D1.

If Brown could do offensively what he did v. Utah, that would be a great start. Little runners, finishing at the hoop when defenses give it to him (or dumping off to Kelly if they collapse), an occasional three, making free throws, etc. His free throwing looked smoother v. Utah. The ones he made he swished. He should work on offense all summer.

I agree about using JHD mostly for defense, but I'd try him at PF in pressure defense and small ball situations.

I agree re Brown. Plus, people tend to focus mostly on offense but he's a force on defense and should be more so as he and the rest of the team get more familiar with the system and Fox can add wrinkles. Offensively, he does need to re-work his shot or he'll never be consistent from outside, but that's the kind of thing that can be done in the offseason. Ditto for improved ballhandling.

Caught the ODowd v Mitty game last night - Odowd has 2 excellent players other than Bowser that are getting a lot of attention - Their freshman center (sturdy, big and skilled with several verbal Pac12 offers) and their other wing player #5 (names escapes me). Point guard is also very skilled just too small for meaningful impact at the Pac12 level. Bowser based on just this one game - though a big time atmosphere and intense competition, is skilled, athletic and long for his 6'5" true height. Was underwhelmed in his energy/effort level except for a couple of aggressive plays. Did not demand the ball or move enough to gain advantageous position - the HS coaches for Dublin (playing the winner) also observed the same. Certainly has potential and seems to be a very good kid, but needs to build strength (over next coupe of years) and hopefully improves his motor.

...at the end of his reign, Monty remained a superb X and O guy, but not much of a recruiter and not big on the warm and fuzzies (i.e. shoving Crabbe), so I'm not sure he possessed the skill set to prevent a player from trading up to an elite program or spotting and closing the deal on good talent. He had shot his wad.

We can certainly expect to see improvement from guys on the roster and it will be welcome. But adding someone who can come in and play immediately and make a difference would have an immense impact on the fortunes of this team. I have no idea if there's anyone still available that even profiles that way, much less if we can get them, but boy would it be nice.

I agree with you in general, but I was talking only about the Mathews brothers. Monty didn't recruit real well, but he did bring in some good players, just not enough of them to satisfy Cal fans. The only ranked players who left his program were a couple of head cases, Gary Franklin, ranked #57 who apparently didn't like the position he was asked to play, and jumped to a better program at Baylor, and DJ Seeley (#60), who he closed the deal with, but Seeley was not big on effort, and sulked on the bench, finally transferring to a lesser program at Cal State Fullerton. Neither one was a loss of any kind, and maybe losing both of them improved the team. He did find and close the deal with Crabbe (#71) and he did the same with Jabari Bird (#20), and Wallace (#94). He brought in some very good unranked players like Justin Cobbs, Richard Solomon, David Kravish, Jorge, MSF, and Jordan Mathews. Just not enough of them.

I think if Monty had stayed, Jordan would not have left, as his beef was with Cuonzo, not Montgomery. And if Jordan had stayed for a coach he liked, maybe Jonah might have given Montgomery a chance to land him.

Monty's problem was not just that he couldn't land top players at Cal, it was that top local players: Lee, Gordon, Rabb... who WANTED to go to Cal, wouldn't just because of Monty.

What would have been great is if Monty had arranged a transition plan for DeCuire to take over with Monty settling into an advisory role.

But why would Lee, Gordon and Rabb not want to play for Monty? A Hall of Fame coach who made NBA players out of big men at that Junior University, had coached in the NBA (ok, not with success), and improved big men he had at Cal?

We will never really know because we were not in the room and can compare the conversation that guys like Altman and Miller are having with guys like Gordon. Unclear it was "just" about coffee cups. The speculation without evidence is that Monty wouldn't kiss their asses and most importantly the hangers on from the AAU crowd and from their families to the extent that coaches who recruit well do.
