Basically they take losing teams as long as they are willing to pay the $50,000 entry fee. I am probably the only one who would go. Usf was in it a few years ago. I could go for a rematch. As Kirk Douglas said in The Final Countdown, " This time things might be different" one more at Haas.....

Santa Clara wins CBI title

*Santa Clara's Kevin Foster made 431 three-point field goals in his career, which is tied for the fourth-most all-time in NCAA Division I history. He finished his collegiate career as Santa Clara's all-time leading scorer with 2,423 points, which is also the most in San Francisco Bay Area Division I history and second most in West Coast Conference history. Having a hard time wrapping my head around us playing in the post-season, but it would be good experience for the freshmen and sophomores.

yeah, I kinda think that if the coaches and particularly the players want to do it, I say go for it. Now, would I pay a bunch of money for a ticket? Hmmm

At least you wouldn't have to worry about the virus. The nearest fan to you at Haas would be a t shirt cannon shot away. Just like the NIT games I went to.

anymore i forget stuff, sorry, speculating about this situation would tickets be sold as open seating, or same place as regular season (surely not), or location dependent improvised rates.

Who knows. My guess is they would try to recover some of the 50k.

Count me in as well.

P.S. I love the way this team competes. They have also improved greatly since the start of the season and would have 3 or 4 additional wins if they played as well at the start of the season as now.

The Final Countdown - a fun movie! I remember seeing it in the theater. The aircraft carrier take-offs and landings were terrific - better than any of the scenes in Top Gun, in my opinion. I never did figure out what the title actually had to do with the plot, though.

I'm thinkin' they'd do it like previous post-season events - you'd get first dibs on your season ticket location, but could buy other (usually cheaper) seats as well.

I actually think attendance would be decent (depending on opponent)

It's all about expectations. That one year where there were 10 people in attendance for the NIT game, most thought before the season we were going to the tourney.

But for this year, any postseason game is way beyond expectations.

For a team like ours, this is really a good thing. The more reps the better.

Not sure if that's true. WSU has already accepted a bid and they're at .500

I suppose it's possible the rules have changed but according to the Wikipedia page (with a reference to the CIT website), that's the rule.

"Participating teams must finish the regular season with a .500 winning percentage or better to qualify. The only exception to this was the now-defunct Great West Conference Tournament winner, who was given an automatic bid to play in the CIT if they were not given an at-large bid to participate in the NCAA or NIT tournaments, until the dissolution of the conference in 201314."

It also says that major conference teams are generally ineligible which would be odd.

"Teams from "major conferences" (defined by CollegeInsider.com as the Power Five conferences, Atlantic 10 Conference, American Athletic Conference, Big East Conference, Conference USA and Mountain West Conference) are generally ineligible. "

Did WSU accept a bid from the CBI or the CIT? Two different post season entertainments.

CBI. They DO NOT require a winning record. What they donrequire is you pay $50,000

I certainly hope we don't accept a CBI invite, of that's even possible. Embarrassing if under .500.

If there's an entry fee, do teams pay their own travel?

Cant be much more embarrassing than our record. We are what we are.i want to watch Cal play more. People wont suddenly be aghast at seeing Cal in the Cbi. I doubt it happens, though.

Back in 2015, Cal declined an invite to the CBI. Many schools decline the CBI due to the tournament's high cost and low return in value as this SB Nation article explains. As a result, the CBI ends up so desperate to fill up spots that they'll even let in P5 teams with losing records, as seen in 2013 (Purdue), 2015 (Colorado), and 2019 (West Virginia).

I can understand the perspective that younger players could benefit from extra practices and minutes. However, isn't Cal still on the hook for the $3 million buyout of Wyking Jones?

The 2015 precedent and Jones buyout are reasons I'd speculate that Cal will turn down a CBI opportunity.

Well I can understand turning down the CBI in 2015 as we were a relevant basketball program back then with routine 20+ win seasons. Didn't make sense from both the cost/return perspective you mention and also due to the stigma of playing in a third tier tournament. But at this point, I don't think anyone cares about the embarrassment factor anymore and it seems like it would be a nice opportunity to gain some experience. $50k really isn't much in the grand scheme.

The freshmen and sophomores get some post-season tourney experience playing at a neutral site. Worth it. (of course, not on my 50 grand, it's not, but i might put up 50 bucks of it))
