The NBA has gone back and forth on drafting players out of high school or requiring a single year of college. Lebron was an Oakland Soldier and spent his summers on the Berkeley campus, hanging out on Telegraph and Durant. Four(?) of his friends and teammates went to Cal. If he had to play a year in college, Joining his buddies at Cal would have been a distinct possibility. Given that he could go straight to the NBA, it was not a possibility.
