Beginning next season, the upper bowl of the Huntsman Center will be curtained off, an athletic department spokesman told The Salt Lake Tribune. The new basketball seating capacity is set at 8,500, but athletic department officials would consider opening the upper bowl if a high-profile opponent and/or ticket demand called for such a move. If the upper bowl were to open for a game, those seats will be sold as general admission.

A seating capacity of 8,500 would make the Huntsman Center the second-smallest in the Pac-12 behind Stanford's Maples Pavilion (7,233).
I cheer for the Bay's two blue and gold teams that are in neighboring counties. Can you name the other one?

Interesting, especially with the timing

if there are games this fall with fans in the stands, I thought it was only if the fans could have enough social distancing. I suggested every other row, with 5 seats apart from families. To do that, Utah might need part of the upper bowl

But I also suggested Cal reduce capacity of Haas. Not by curtaining off, but by replacing some of the seats in the upper section with something useful, like some suite-like sections, or other useful/beneficial improvements, and/or to increase the spacing in some of the seats like the premium benches (right now the spacing is very tight, and I think the same as the regular bench seats)

Haas with a 9K capacity seems about right

The people who run Haas are too stupid to simply hang the retired jerseys and championship banners properly (i.e., from the rafters). Even high school gyms across the country get that one right. I wouldn't hold your breath on any improvements.

A good example of a simple, low cost improvement is to take out the top row or two of one side of Haas. That takes out a small number of seats and reduces rarely needed capacity

With the extra space they could put up the banners.

Jason Kidd's jersey and the National Championship banner will be inside Haas again where they belong

That can't cost that much money

They have no intention of doing that as evidenced by no response. With lowered revenues I would not anticipate any changes.

with recent crowds, Harmon gym was about right.

Almost all college stadiums and arenas have too many seats given that every game is on TV now. Capacity should be reduced by at least 20 percent at most schools.

Yup. When Haas was built, the TV money was not projected to be what it became. At the time, 10k-12k arena made sense for a rising program, but it was probably less than a decade later, that it became obvious that a mistake was made. A similar mistake was made when Memorial was upgraded, although it seemed more obvious at that time that it would be too big (than when Haas was built).

FWIW, Memorial is increasing the width of its bench seating by 6 inches. Maybe they will be doing the same at Haas?

Must not be in the bench back areas. Those seats are all sold. But good idea

do you know how they will do this? (aren't the numbers etched in the aluminum benches?

do you know how many seats that eliminates in one row?

Section T had 26 seats I think? It's 20 now.

If that was done throughout CMS, seating capacity might be decreased by as much as 10,000.

Why are they doing this?? Certainly wont help social distancing . Still too close to rows behind and in front. They should have done what Stanford did with bench backs all the way around.

Are the doing this in the bench backs????

well it will slightly help social distancing ... right now it is elbow to elbow like economy class on an airplane

but besides social distancing, it will just be more comfortable for the fans

I would guess that it's just in donor sections like T and TT.

I feel like the big issue isn't all width, but the depth on the rows though. They go hand in hand as one can sit somewhat diagonally, it's extra width, but it's not optimal.

I've posted before and an advocate of them changing more seats to section with tables in front.

It uses 2 rows and are the best and most comfortable seats in memorial, including the CMS seat backs

Movie theaters have adjusted for dropping demand by replacing traditional tightly packed uncomfortable seats with wide, reclining seats with tables and more leg room in front

This probably reduced capacity 50%

I'm not saying we should do that, but it's an example how some businesses are adjusting to drop in demand which has resulted in excess capacity

Dont want a table in front of my seat. We rarely eat or drink anything at games.

that's fine. I'm not talking about converting the entire stadium. I'm talking about the general concept, and creating extra sections like those in different parts of the stadium. If they put one in T or TT I'd buy season tickets there. If they had them farther away from the 50 yard line on the east side, I'd consider it

just provides choices to fans, and lowering our capacity little isn't a problem
