He still has 3 to play I think? He only played a year at Fresno.

But we are Cal, so he will now steadily develop, graduate early, and grad transfer out his senior season.

I wish we had him this year but what was the basis for the request for waiver (other than the fact that it seems like everyone else gets one)? He is from San Bernardino so the "I need to be closer to my family during the pandemic" excuse doesn't work for transferring to Cal from Fresno since he will now be a couple of hours further, Does Fresno have a say and they opposed? He has a redshirt year (and if I am him, this is the year to use it).

I think this was expected. We brought in two grad transfer guards for this year. Agree that the chances he plays his 5th year at Cal are slim but hopefully we are on the upswing by then and can use the scholarship at that time for a top recruit.

So---how many years does he play assuming he walks in his fifth year??

Two.

Along with improvement from Joel Brown, grad transfer Makale Foreman is critical for this season. We will then get Hyder next year. Hopefully Mahaney the following year.

Of course. If cal were Kentucky or Duke, the NCAA would've bent over backwards to clear him to okay this year. But the NCAA likes to use the non-elite programs as examples to show it really enforces the rules.

Indeed. Tarkanian famously said, " Every time Kentucky is caught cheating, Sacramento State gets punished." ( close enough).

Tough decision for Team as Hyder is a good player who is most comfortable at PG. the HC at Fresno was not supportive of the decision to transfer and did not weigh in on the process/waiver application - though asked to. However it would have been breaking normal precedent for JH to have received an waiver. Just unfortunate as its an unusual year, would have been the honorable decision by the NCAA to support the player's request to be eligible.

That highlights a part about the NCAA transfer waiver process that is not always highlighted and quite unfair - a former million dollar making coach seems to hold way too much power over the future of the unpaid player.

I thought the NCAA had moved to do away with some of that power, but I guess not enough.
