I know you would love to have a 7' BB player Fox, but Lars is not that. More Thorpe with some Kelly. Slow to no twitch

We are spaced pretty well on O. The timing of the flex screen is off though, and the cutter isn't setting up the defender when running off of the screen. We are only running one off ball screen at a time. Would love to see two going at a time to give the passer multiple options.

Kelly has regressed in finishing around the rim. He should have 3 baskets right now and he has missed all of them. All pretty much point blank.
Yah Kelly seems out of it. Man, are you the basketball version of killa22? Good analysis.
Ha! I wish. Killa is the man!

This game is so frustrating to watch. We are making the game so tough on ourselves. WAY too many turnovers. Just throwing it right to the other team.

We could use some lessons on v-cutting for sure. Our screens are mostly ineffective because we aren't setting up our defender. And our screeners aren't rolling properly and ready to accept passes, though KK did that just now. Would like to see him play more. Also had a nice box out leading to a foul on them.

Not enough movement on offense for my taste. We should be moving quickly after the pass leaves our hand, looking for someone away from the ball to hit. That is very different from how most teams (besides the Warriors and Spurs) play today (mostly on ball screens and pick and roll).

Too many of our passes are going to players who are moving away from the basket as opposed to players ready to shoot or moving towards the basket.

Ah sounds like of like the offense of our TV commentator today.
Something to that. Braun liked the flex offense. But mostly it was pass the ball around outside untili we found a way to get Lampley the ball.

Braun was a decent recruiter so the offenses were OK due to sheer talent -- Powe, Shipp, Anderson, Tamir, Lampley, etc.

Nicholls looks tired. Thanks to Fox's sub pattern, the Bears look much fresher.
Patience is a virtue, but I’m not into virtue signaling these days.

The last possession with the drive and kick out was our best look yet. If we can figure out a way to do that more frequently without turning the ball over (jumping into guys when making the pass or throwing it to the other team), we could be pretty good. So if I'm Fox, I try to figure out a way to get enough movement to get Bradley the ball with a defender running at him and letting him drive to the hoop to initiate that motion. Either he finishes at the rim or makes the pass to the open man which will force the defense to scramble.

Joel's lack of wanting to shoot caused him to try a flip pass behind his back instead of going to the rim. He really needs to attack the basket more.

20 turnovers. Missed the front end at least 3 times. That isn't good.

We were their 4th. They got St. Mary's next.

Only way we can be competitive with ASU is if we play stingy D, are tough on the boards, and make our shots.

If you want to bask in self loathing, watch the rebroadcast of the Big Game they are playing after the hoop game.

20 turnovers is horrendous. But our shooting percentages ended up almost respectable. And holding a high-scoring team under 50 is impressive.

the first half defense was pretty good, but it helped a lot that Nicholls State was sloppy with the ball.

In the second half, a pickup game broke out.
I've never watched such a frenetic, undisciplined game in a college basketball game.

Nicholls State strategy was to get us to play fast and be aggressive and physical.

It worked to a great extent... we had turnovers, missed inside shots with all the contact, played volleyball on rebounds, and missed our 3s, even when wide open. You miss those shots because you're sped up, even when you are wide open

Much of that was what Nicholls State wanted

However the most concerning to me is Brown's PG play. We need him to be handle the ball securely, make good decisions and score on drives with the entire defense scrambling. You'd think that would favor his skills.

Hate to compare with past players, but an under appreciated aspect of Paris's game was his ball security. He easily broke most presses/traps, and he certainly would have made them pay with multiple drives and finishes at the basket.

The good news is we played fast better than a team that always plays fast, and this can only help us against aggressive fast teams in future games ... like ASU ...

I'm sure Pac-12 Bay Area will have it on replay about 10 more times before our next game.

I was thinking (a little) about the game as late as this afternoon. I knew about the 4:30 tip-off. Really, I blame my kids and their neediness. Honestly though, I want to watch a delayed broadcast of the Nicholls St game like I want to watch paint dry. Zipped through the game thread in ten minutes. We're good! On to ASU!

Hope that's the reason he isn't playing (hope the illness is minor.) I really, really, don't want to keep singling out Lars, I know he's trying his best, but the reality is the game is just too fast for him. Its frustrating because his skill set is decent, but time after time on both ends of the court he is just a second too slow to react. I've watched basketball a long time but I'm still not sure if this weakness can be corrected. Its been a full year. Unless that improves DJ has to get the minutes Lars has been getting for this team to succeed.

I agree and piling on is not nice for I am sure Lars is a dedicated Cal BB player doing his very best. But what you are talking about is what I call "twitch factor". For the most part either an athlete has it or doesn't. It is what makes that athlete look slow. The split second reaction time is just slower. The appearance is that the synapses are just not firing quickly. In sports it effects bat speed, running speed, ability to have orientation when in a spin, reacting to a rebound in traffic, etc. It is more than just speed. I guess you could call it reaction time if wanted. I am convinced Lars will get better with time but cannot imagine him being first string next year or the year after given tons of playing time this year. I would not argue for a minute that he will not get better, but I have seen little improvement in this twitch factor this year over last.

Agree on all counts about Lars - hate to pile on but I think its time to invest playing time in other areas. Lars is a seven footer, but he plays like he's 6'8". Not trying to be funny, but most of his height is in his neck and head - not in his arms and shoulders.

I'd say his torso is relatively long and his arms and legs are relatively short so he doesn't have the reach or wingspan of some seven-footers.
