He tried. He failed. I'm glad he found work of some kind.

At least he set a school record. He'll always have that.

Let's hope he keeps it, and no Cal team ever breaks it. It could have been even worse.

A guy that couldn't coach is hired as an analyst. I give up.

He's not a bad guy. He can talk. Remember his first presser we thought we found a winner.

Yup. Worst head coach in the history of Cal basketball, who knows, maybe the worst head coach in any Cal varsity sport ever.

That little bit extra he's making from TV will allow him to do some Christmas shopping this year. The million-a-year we're paying him on the buy-out doesn't go very far, nowadays.

Typical Pac12 Net "on the cheap" hire, leaving more $ for Emperor Scott.

Probably won't. P12N will just assign some rando ex-Stanford player to work the Cal games, like they usually do. ;-)

Do you not remember that first presser, he was so affable and effusive we thought wow he's a great guy and we may be in good hands. I recall a clear consensus we liked him. Kind of like the reaction when Musgrave was hired lol. We just go by the opening presser or initial reaction without really digging deeper. Now I think some of us thought Wilcox was a bore in his first presser. Many were not impressed. Turns out he is legit. And remember our first impressions of Fox - we especially didn't like his opening speech to his new players (The speech yes). But it appears that while the results aren't spectacular yet, he seems to be slow building it like Wilcox. My point is don't go by first impressions especially made for media events.

I recall your reaction in Bold as being the concensus - with a wait and see on coaching and whether he was a 'winner'. There was LOTS of HOPE skewing our visions of the future.

I met Jones soon after he was hired - he was very affable - he didn't talk hoops like coach. I met Cuonzo after he was hired - he was also pleasant in a different way and talked about defense. I met Monty after he was hired, he was dry and polite and talked about maximizing a developing players potential.

All three were affable in their own way. Two of the three included a coaching aspect in their first impression. But your point about first impressions made me chuckle at myself. Looking back, I would call three of them gentlemen, but only two of them coaches.

i never thought he was a good speaker

he wasn't inspirational nor a strong motivator, and he even had poor body language when we spoke

nothing he said was particularly original or insightful

i even remember a short Q&A that was intended to be a quick fun segment shown on the scoreboard ... his answer was so bad, that I was surprised that Cal used it

I know Theo to be a solid dude squared. I had no use for Wyking after the dust up in Maui with Theo. Nothing happened after that incident that convinced me that I had unfairly rushed to judgment. Nope, only confirmation from that point forward.

Now Theo and Wyking are just two guys moving in opposite directions:

Theo Robertson: Meet the coach behind Warriors' rookie Eric Paschall's big season

It would have made more sense to hire Theo than Wyking. Wyking was a ridiculous, only at Cal hire, and I said so at the time. I also did not like the Fox hire. Low upside. I think it makes more sense to swing and miss and then move on quickly if necessary rather than go for a known mediocrity.

Fox is a retread hire of a program that does not want to compete, but does not want to be embarrassed. The Wyking hire was incredible incompetence. The guy had no record, and no accomplishments as Assistant. For a team that would run through a wall for Cuonzo, Wyking was not well liked or particularly respected.

Your first sentence is far too harsh, though your comments about Wyking are correct.

Before the program can get to the point of playing in the NCAA tournament, it has to first get to the point of being non-terrible. Fox was hired to get the program off of rock bottom and onto that first step, and he will. After the program gets there, then we can talk about whether Fox is the right guy to get the Bears up to the step after that one.
