Chance to cut it to 7, clean 3 look for Grant -- air ball. That's our 2020.

Yep we are keeping it somewhat close against probable 5-6th place WCC team.

We can;'t shoot for s***. Obvious that our guys didn't work on shooting in the offseason.
They have both Betley and Foreman on lock. Joel doesn't want to shoot, not even layups. Lars is brutal. And Fox is not Mr. offensive guru. *sigh*
We need to recruit guards and wings who can shoot. The list of guards/wings we have recruited who can't shoot is long, especially at point guard. Having at least 3 good shooters on the floor at all times spreads the floor and makes everything easier.

I actually think we have a better chance with Bowser instead of Joel.

Agree. I like what I've seen from Bowser so far. He needs more PT. Haven't seen him take an outside shot yet but loved his hustle on that rebound.

If the wings on the bench can't shoot, then we need to politely ask them to leave.

74-62 final. Not as close as the score might indicate.

I think bowser has taken two three point shots, but don't think he made either

But he looks like he has a good feel for the game and plenty of bounce

But Mr. Bowser, welcome to D1 defenders

I remember Matt's freshman year where he had a number of dunk attempts blocked

This is no longer HS

The difference in this game is they made their threes and we didn't. We had plenty of good looks but missed most, including some bricks

Good news is we found Grant again

Shhhhhhh... GREAT practical joke idea: We gotta get "MinotStateBeav"'s home address, print up a fake newspaper saying "Cal Beats Pepperdine in Greatest Comeback Win of All Time" and have it on his doorstep when he wakes up tomorrow morning! If he really lives in N. Dakota or thereabouts, it'll make it all the more incredible!

Let's do this! Who's in?

Bradley and Anticevich combined for 48 points on 17-for-33 shooting. The rest of the Bears were 4-for-20 for 14 points. Cal has to have some type of third scorer to help out. The next highest scorer had 4 points. You can't win any games like that. And again, the opponent won the game in the first half with 3-point shooting. I'm not sure why Cal decides to wait until the second half to defend but they allowed just 30 points after halftime and actually made Pepperdine work (most of the time) on offense. Just stunned that we can't recruit scorers, of all the players in California and on the West Coast, we haven't recruited shooters or scorers. I think we had hopes that Cal would be improved after last season but I just don't see the progress and the newcomers don't seem to be impactful at all.

This team really misses Paris. For all the complaints last season about his lack of assists at least he could score and make free throws ( 2 things that are far above the ability of Joel Brown at this point). Andre Kelly was much more effective getting passes from Paris. He seems lost and out of shape at this point. Lars is a project as we all have observed. I agree that we should be playing Bowser more. We are really hurting at center. Thorpe has no clue as to how to rotate to a shooter on time. I actually like Fox as a coach and think that his recruits next year will be able to play right away plus having Hyder at the point. Wonder what the over/under is on conference wins this year, guessing 2 at this time. I love Cal basketball and will watch every game this season as usual. Hopefully, we will see some development after getting boat-raced for the remainder of the non-conference schedule. KInd of down right now but will try and see the glass as half full going forward.

I know I'm an outlier here, but I always liked Ben Braun; he embraced everything about Cal. 5 Big Dances, one NIT championship (yeah, I even followed those games on radio streaming) Perhaps Ben was never gonna get us a Final Four, but just being in the top half of the pac is better than the alternative.

Ben's accomplishments are more than our current coach accomplished at his previous P5 job. Which really puts things into perspective.

Braun was a very good recruiter, which Fox has not shown yet. But he was a brutal game day coach, worse than Fox. But Fox is only mediocre at best in this regard. I am sure this all could have been seen looking at Georgia's game tape. His offensive stats while there were poor from what I have read.

I believe he donated $250,000 to the university according to my sources. How many NCCA coaches ya figure have done that?
I bumped into him in the lobby of a hotel in SoCal years ago when he was still coaching the Bears. I introduced myself to him and said I was a season ticket holder. He was very charming and friendly. An A+ ambassador for the university.

The skinny on Fox always has been decent coach, meh recruiter. And decent coach is step-up. This will be a weird COVID season in any event. So next year with better players, maybe being at Cal and his assistants may mean better recruiting long term. Patience and time will tell. We forget just how low Cal was 2 season ago.

Better players next year? Not much. I like the Irish guy. Other than that ... And decent coach is not good enough even if better than the previous perhaps worst in the country.

I don't understand how the coaches are not running plays for Betley who seemingly is our best shooter and can help us immensely by making threes, along with Bradley and Anticevich doing their thing. He was hounded all game (credit to Romar but it's an easy game plan against us) and had to force up a lot of shots, getting him out of rhythm and then rushing. Get the guy a lot of looks.

Ha it would be Cal to have our greatest comeback of all time v. a team that plays in a HS gym (albeit the campus is in one of the best settings around overlooking Malibu).

Can you please elaborate on what you are calling people to do? There is a lot of grey area between the black and white. One could interpret your exclamatory as marching into the ADs office (with mask, of course) and demanding that Knowlton fire Fox immediately and bring Monty out of retirement (good luck). On the other end - it could mean more whining on BI and bloviation about the semantics of 'pumper', 'demand' & Cal basketball. Both seem fun - and the season is pretty meh, anyway - just looking for direction to help fill the SIP time.

FWIW - I don't consider myself a pumper and have a long list of concerns about FOX's coaching. But I generally think the program (and Fox) deserves my support until the season ends (absent gross incompetence or criminality).

My biased ranking of Cal's last 40 years of coaches:

Monty
Braun
Cuonzo
Campanelli
Fox
Kutchen
Bozeman
Jones

I think it would be interesting to heat up the way back machine and have Campanelli vs Fox with the same rosters and see who wins best out of 7 series.

Long-time basketball season ticket holder here: I was not a fan of the hire initially, but I think Mark Fox is ABSOLUTELY deserving of support. He is our basketball coach, for crying out loud, in only his second season. In his first season, the team showed improvement both from the previous season and also over the course of the season. Recruiting for next year seems to be incrementally improved. Lots to be done still, obviously.

Let's give the guy a chance. Also, let's not forget that we are paying his predecessor through next year, so what the heck other options do we have?

I support Mark Fox and hope he has great success here. I would call that being a reasonable Cal Basketball fan, but if it also labels me a "sunshine pumper", so be it.
