would you rather play for monty or braun?? monty is a better coach ;but, he has a more *****ly personality. I think personally I might value praise coming from Monty rather than braun; on thge other hand, I have never handled criticism well. so, in the long run, I might have a better emotional relationship with braun...But...that's only me. how about you????replace *****ly with volatile...*****ly was erased by the Mods...perfectly acceptable word...

Without buying a vowel your word rhymes with brick Im guessing. Its a real word that means nothing of the off color kind, strange.
I wonder if I write our ex coach Dick Kuchens name if he gets scrubbed too lol.
Criticism is one thing. Running til you heave is another, which Braun gleefully liked to do to get his guys in shape. Hmm I will take growing a thick skin and getting better the Monty way.

How about a laboratory produced hybrid: Braun's recruiting and taste in restaurants, combined with Monty's coaching and press conferences.

I think I'd rather play for Monty. I wouldn't mind the criticism. Braun is a really nice guy, but I don't think I could stand dribbling back and forth around the perimeter, seemingly with no real objective, or nobody else getting open. Also, I wasn't a good practice player, I'd get bored, so I wouldn't see the floor much in a game. I was always better in games, but only a couple coaches figured that out.

I was being (a little) facetious about the heaving. I am not against pushing high levels of fitness. But I would pay top dollar to someone who would run for me.

I think we created a bit of a false dichotomy in our descriptions of these guys. Rod Bensen's description of Braun's relationship with the players is not the "nice guy" he was with the fans. Monty was more aloof than critical in practice, often he didn't even run them. When he did instruct, he was like a teacher, explaining what he wanted done and why. Braun was the opposite. It was during games that Monty was emotional and vocal and could be very harsh especially with his best players (and the refs) sometimes running out on the court, even getting physical with players. Behavior we complained about when he was at Stanford got him T'd up at Cal. Braun was the opposite.
After "the shove" and getting multiple T's at Cal, Monty would just have ongoing discussion with Travis and then have Travis do a lot of the in-game coaching of the players, and that seemed to work well.
A ref on ce told me that 'Monty was the biggest pain" when he was at Stanford. Wooden was a 'pain' too. Wooden had the PR rep as a Saint; but, in actual practice, he was more like the Devil. I would rather play for Monty than Wooden.
Having seen Monty in action, he praised the guys that needed the confidence and hammered guys that needed their butts kicked. Favorite Monty story was sitting next to Allan Crabbe's mother in Utah and she starts screaming at Monty her kid is not hustling (we were literally seated behind Monty, and next to Monty's wife) and to get on his case, so loud even Crabbe hears it and starts laughing. So Monty calls time out, tells Crabbe unless he wants to get embarrassed more by his mom to get his head in the game and then spends the rest of the time out talking to a certain point guard about relaxing, how he is really good shooter, the shots will fall, etc. I sat behind the bench a number of times and I have never seen a coach treat each player so differently. The guy was a master. It is a no brainer who I would play for, and I like Braun as a person, and respect his coaching. But Monty was in a league of his own.SFCityBear said:

The year of the shove was in some ways an outlier. Monty had some medical issues at the time, and was on some meds that didn't help his predisposition towards refs or getting the most out of players.calumnus said:SFCityBear said:
