St Martins has been crushed in its two games to date at Washington State & at Oregon. They lost to the Cougars and the Ducks by 51 & 73 points, respectively. WSU led 44-14 and Oregon led 47-7 at halftime. Oregon will face Westmont this weekend. Westmont held the lead over Cal by 8 points at intermission before the Bears awakened.

I'm also presenting some parameters to help evaluate Cal's progress early this season. The pair of Pac 12 teams scored in excess of 20 points per quarter vs St Martins in 7 out of 8 quarters. Wazzu only tallied 18 in the final period of their contest. I was actually stunned to see the margins of victory by the upper division of our conference

Here is Saint Martin's team stats from last season. They return everyone except for Vivola and they have 13 players on their roster for the 2021-22 campaign.

We didn't score for half of the first period. Sela not dressed.
Dalayah good on breaks. Green quick hands and creates turnovers

May be seeing a nine player rotation developing that we will use. Maybe ten, if Green can come on further.

Daniels has changed her shooting form. Paying off so far with 4-4 from the line,

Was hoping to see more polish from Oniyah. One player we will really need against PAC-12 teams.

Cal stopped turning the ball over - but the shooting still is .... not good. No made threes (well, only two attempts) - and 9-28 overall. LiveStats says that St. Martins is out-rebounding the Bears - odd.

So, Cal is 12-14 from the line and has 18 points off of 21 St. Martin turnovers.
Daniels leads with 12 - Crocker 6 - Curry 6 - Bush 4 - McIntosh 2
Only 4 assists - but then, there only are 9 made field goals.

Big part of our offense this year will be "Unleash Curry". Most ready-to-play freshman we have had in quite some time.

It's a win. 79-32.
Second half much better all around. And at the end, the Bears even made three threes!

18-21 on free throws - mighty impressive. 14 assists on 29 made field goals.

Curry may be our best player ... some of those passes are picked off, but she's got vision and ball handling. Love her 3 point shot and pull up

Green is a smooth shooter. Hope she gets to 100% healthy by conference play
Daniels shooting form from the line 100% better than last season. I'm sure she put in a lot of work to do that. Hopefully it will start to translate to midrange shots and pull ups too

Evelien hesitated on a wide open baseline 14 footer, and then passed is away. That concerned me. The next time she was that open she too the shot and hit it.

Bush has a nice game around the basket (can she do it against bigger, longer players?), but she also hesitated and then bricked a 14 footer

Considering 3 of our forwards don't reliably shoot beyond 8+ feet is a concern

Good to see Elma play. She has high hoops IQ and skills...but a heavy knee brace.

Ornela looks stronger. I knew she could shoot last year, but they just weren't falling. This year, her form looks improved and the results are already better

St Martin's was significantly overmatched athletically, and not as skilled as our first exhibition.

But they won by 40 points, everyone played, and did scored. We certainly need the practice and warm up for the OOC games starting soon

Anyone know of Heide's injury status? There are going to be some games where we could really use that height and arms-up defense.

Ornela hits her Threes in pre game shoot around......in both exhibition games......

Much scrappier defense than I was expecting (against, admittedly, a much less talented team). I have the impression that practices have been intense and profitable; there are male practice players again, yes? Crocker was fierce--not always accurate but a lot of fun to watch. Mostly, I was just delighted to be watching live basketball again.

Agree on all three points, although Oniyah did calm down in the last quarter, as I recall.

Scrappy game with bodies all over the floor. Thankfully none of the players on either side sustained any obvious injuries.

I agree Jayda is the real thing. With Leilani looking better than ever, Cailyn back, and Jazlen and Alma on the mend we should be much improved at guard.

I think both Dalayah and Michelle could benefit from learning when to slow down just a little. Both are very quick but sometimes don't take the time to finish or (in Michelle's case) to avoid fouling.

To me the highlight stats were Cal forcing 34 St Martin's turnovers and holding them to 27% shooting. OTOH I was disappointed with our rebounding, only Dalayah and Evelien had more than 4 and all of our guards managed just 8.

BTW another good game day experience - the band played and the sound system didn't.

Cal has played poorly in the 1st half of both exhibition games. Tonight was horrific in the opening period. The offense came together in the 2nd quarter and the Bears scored 20 or more over each of the final three quarters.
Cal has blown out their opponents in the 2nd half of each contest. I thought tonight that Crocker, Onyiah, Maslov & Leilani played out-of-control. The initial three picked up 3 quick PFs each and McIntosh just threw up wild shots on drives to the basket that had no chance.

We'll know more after the season opener vs Sac State next Tuesday night. USF will be a tough opponent in the Warrior's arena. I believe that I read that they were picked first in their conference this season. GO BEARS!

Did you see where former USC player Minyon Moore is now an assistant at Sac St.

Everyone was playing aggressive defense and I see nothing wrong with a team total of 16 fouls. Leilani in particular was right in someone's grill all night and had no fouls in 30 minutes. She also drew 4 fouls and had 3 steals. And FWIW everyone was missing in the 1st quarter.

The new post players in uniform, Fatou Samb and Michelle Onyiah look wonderfully athletic - but not yet D1 skilled. The opposite of our beloved Chen Yu who was actually quite skilled but on the umm slow side and not a jumper. Its easier to coach skills than speed and jumping in my humblest opinion. I would bet on great things ahead for our center/PF position - plus Heide, the best is yet to come.

#Among other positives #30 Curry knows how to finish shots on the break, and has court vision. She doesn't appear to force shots or get trapped and panic. If they sell a Curry jersey in the store I just may buy one (Men's XL, just sayin'.)

It will be a pleasure to watch this young team grow in a very very tough Pac12..
I would also note that Jadyn Bush was always the first player back on defense, even after her own shots. With her 2-way skills and experience I'd bet her plus/minus will be quite positive.

I know two exhibition is a small sample size, but I already feel comfortable saying that Curry will be a great player for Cal. She has all the totals.
Daniels looks much improved. We really need our bigs to develop in order to be competitive in the conference.

I was watching the game on the livestream last night and didn't see coach Cole or Reed on the bench. Are they in covid protocol or something?

Well, that is why they play exhibition games. Overall, I was happy to see the Bears in action...and even at the end, when Charmin pretty much cleared the bench, the players who came in did well. The team is very young, but I have optimism that we have the athleticism and talent to build toward a strong future. The Pac-12 is tough but every game I imagine we will see a young team get better and better. Go Bears!

Let's not make that kind of assumption. Coach Reed was at the open practice on Sunday. Coach Cole was not. All Charmin said was that she was at home.

I could swear that the 3-coaches-on-the-bench thing came up a few days ago, but I can't find it now: something like an NCAA rule forbidding more than 3 coaches appearing at a game.

And think that those players who came in at the end of the game were starters last year, except for Sierra, former walk-on

A win is a win and it ended up being a dominant win, however, any coach would / should be concerned about that 1st quarter. I'm surprised ELS is starting and getting the minutes she's getting. It's just exhibition games so perhaps it doesn't mean much.

The NCAA rule is that Charmin can only have 3 assistant coaches. Kai is considered a special assistant to the head coach and not included in that 3.

When one of those assistants is absent from a game or practice, Kai can fill-in.

So, the whole season two coaches will not be on the bench? Can all the coaches not help with practices?

This is the first time I've heard this before so I'm interested.

That's NOT at all what I said.

Coach Smith's 3 assistants are Kelly Cole, Paul Reed and Eliza Pierre. Kai Felton is a special assistant to Coach Smith.

All 3 assistants (Reed, Cole, Pierre) will generally be on the bench come game time. However, if one is out on a recruiting trip or perhaps out on personal business or ill, Kai Felton can fill-in.

Besides the new players and the players returning from injury, the other factor for this season is the change to Kelly Cole.

A big key will be what offensive scheme she is putting in, and how she will make in-game adjustments

I already saw a little dribble drive actions in one of the exhibition games. I hadn't seen that before for Cal WBB
