Agreed. These are not our grandparents' collegiate sports, but a whole new ball game, so to speak, and I don't think the current situation can be blamed on C.S. Players are also leaving OSU, and Rueck is a damned good coach. I'd like to hear his, and Tara's, take on it.mbBear said:It's 2023.calbear80 said:

I read that players are being recruited by other programs before they enter the portal. Also, now there are agents interested in signing players for NIL contracts. Promises are probably made convincing players they would be better off transferring to their program. I don't think every player will reap the rewards of transferring to another WBB program. Angel Reese has become the Poster Child for winning a National Championship after transferring while the NILdeals are rolling in...... She certainly made sure millions of people know who she is with her on court antics and comments. It's good student athletes can have some income, but the lure of NIL deals has changed the game! Cal is not alone.....Maybe we will get to see Ornela make some threes. She nails them in pre-game shooting!CalWSportsFan said:
There are nearly 1000 players in the portal this year. Many top tier schools are losing players to the portal....Cal is NOT an outlier. https://justwomenssports.com/reads/ncaa-basketball-transfer-portal-tracker-2023/
The assumptions being made are: 1) There is huge potential for endorsement contracts in women's college basketball beyond a few top players and Instagram stars; 2) All top players will rank short-term money ahead of long-term academic opportunity; 3) Fans will support a new professional model for college sports.HoopDreams said:

looks like stanford losing 3 players
they aren't going benefit from NIL, and could substantially lose from it if they don't change their stance on it
on the other hand, with a few big donors they could rocket up
agree on all countsannarborbear said:The assumptions being made are: 1) There is huge potential for endorsement contracts in women's college basketball beyond a few top players and Instagram stars; 2) All top players will rank short-term money ahead of long-term academic opportunity; 3) Fans will support a new professional model for college sports.HoopDreams said:

I hope that Stanford, will, in fact, buck the trend to see if these hypotheses are true.
And other than Betts, the other two players leaving Stanford did not show enough to command top dollar, so perhaps there were other reasons for their departures.
