Welcome Marta! More good news!

Must be many more prospects in the Greece-Spain-Sweden triangle.

Great get! I imagine she'll have a Peanut-like impact. She brings a lot of experience. Technically it seems she could have up to 3 years of playing eligibility left!

This player has had an unusual history at Tennessee. Marta was a freshman during the Covid 2020 season and started 14 games. She missed 2021 due to injury. Suarez played half of last season (14 games) and went home to Spain on January 4th for personal reasons. It would seem that she should have three years of eligibility left if she opts to exercise them.

Marta Suarez was consistent in the two years that she played for the Lady Vols. She scored in the 4+ point range and grabbed 3+ rebounds per game. She is 6-3 but is listed as a guard/forward. Here's her results against Stanford in Palo Alto in 2022. Marta played 17 minutes and scored 7 points. She did not grab a single rebound.

She also scored 7 points in a home loss to UCLA. Marta played 14 minutes and did collect 4 rebounds in this contest.

In each game, Suarez took one three point shot and missed. She shot only 18.8% on treys for the season so basically she should not take 'em (IMO). She also is not a good ball handler so I would think that Cal would use her on the inside as a fourth frontline player (forward).

Cal's two Spanish front court players should collaborate and work on improving each others's games.

The one possible positive outcome is that her productivity could increase because she'll likely have a bigger role for the Bears than she did for the Lady Vols. She played on a talented team at Tennessee. There will be much more room for her to expand her PT if she can demonstrate that she deserves it. GO BEARS!

Going international makes sense in trying to catch up in the PAC12. We are not getting all "difference makers" in the portal, but it would be great if we could focus more on solid defense and rebounding the way USC has done.

I think it might be easier to find 3-point shooters than to find great athletes who play great defense.

Also it seems to me that most international bigs learn to play all over the court, not just under the basket. What we give up in rebounding and interior defense we should get back in shooting, ballhandling, and passing. Looks like small ball is working for the Warriors, why not for us?

We were 11th in defense and 11th in rebounding last year. If you want to continue to finish at the bottom, that is a great strategy. I think the combination of Lane, Suarez and Williams could give us the size and bulk to rebuild in that area on the front line. Michelle can also give us shot-blocking and rebounding if Charmin can bring in a coach who can finally reach her. We will not have Steph Curry (or Jayda Curry) in the line-up, so let's at least try to be a decent defensive and rebounding team. It did really work for USC last year, because they (and Beth Burns) did not settle for anything less out of their players.

I like defense and rebounding. I think Michelle will be our best rebounder by far and I'd like to have a few more like her.

It's not all about size. Kristine had length but not much bulk and Gennifer didn't have that much of either but both had quickness and hops and knew where the ball would come down.

Lane is a great rebounder and had multiple 20+ rebound games at UCSB. But it starts out with everybody boxing out, and guards also going to the boards. For some reason, our recent teams haven't been doing that. It is both coaching and attitude. Need to get back to it. Saw a stat for the men's game that in spite of all the jumping ability, most rebounds are still taken below the rim through good boxing out fundamentals and anticipation

Agreed. I loved Brittany Boyd's rebounding.

agree.

Steph Curry has proved that a guard can be a great rebounder by understanding where the ball will come off the rim, and aggressively pursuing the ball ... also many people think blocking out is something post players do

but in reality, guards on the perimeter should also block out

We now have all of the missing pieces. Time to see what we can do.

knowing what type of shot 2pt vs 3pt shot makes a difference in where the rebound goes. guards get the longer rebounds opposite the shot or in the mid key area. on defense guard blocking out is essential. on offense one guard is usually the safety and the one to get back first on defense. boyd penetrated alot so getting offensive rebounds, she could do while the other guard played safety. good teams know, bad teams don't.

that's right, although some guards get plenty of rebounds in the post too
