I'm glad to see this topic openly discussed. To paraphrase BearBloke, when I were a little lass, YOU DID NOT TALK ABOUT MENSTRUATION IN PUBLIC--except in those euphemistic ads--and
never in front of males. It was "private" (i.e., mysterious and shameful and kind of dirty), instead of a fact of female life that plays an important role in the propagation of the species. I'm still a bit startled, but relieved, to hear our two daughters sometimes casually mentioning their periods in front of the grandboys and girls.
