I was reading Cardinal Newman in Santa Rosa has a star player from Brazil Taissa "Tissi" Queiroz a 6'1" guard for the class of 2025.

Said to be the best player at the Girls Cali Live 23 event in June only after Morgan Cheli despite a handful of other ESPN Hoopgurlz ranked players in attendance. Sounds like Cal was the first Pac-12 to immediately offer but won't be the last

Also, I've posted about this under-the-radar prospect before, but 6'2" forward Mahogany Chandler-Roberts from Portland is said to be very good and Cal has been after her for a while. She's this upcoming 2024 class

Elsewhere, Cal has offered 6'0" wing Terri'A Russell of Oakland Tech. And her teammate 6'3" Jhai Johnson also 2026 sounds like a potential Power 5 prospect:

I heard about Tissi Queiroz and there's some question as to whether she'll be eligible to play for Cardinal Newman -- but regardless, she is clearly a very good player.

Hopefully CIF lets her play (I've never understood why it's their job to keep kids from playing rather than making it easy for them to play) and we can all see for ourselves.

Benson H.S. Portland Oregon

F Mahogany Chandler-Roberts, so., 6-2

"One of the state's most coveted recruits, Chandler-Roberts is a skilled sophomore with limitless potential. She already holds an offer from California and is receiving interest from Louisville, Oregon and Stanford, among others. "Mahogany may go down as the most talented player I've ever coached," head coach Eric Knox said. "She can post up, shoot from long range, handle like a guard and defend all five positions. She's a special kid and a special talent."

If she has any offer from Stanford, Louisville or Oregon then Cal is automatically out of the running.

They call that a defeatist attitude.

Give the young woman credit for making a decision based upon loyalty, "fit", sincerity and longevity. Our offer came first.

You can call it a defeatist attitude all you want. I call it a realistic one. I hope I am proven wrong and hope our Bears turn it around

I am not discrediting the young woman for anything. I am sure she will be making the right decision for herself. I do doubt that our offer coming first will be one of the major determining factors.

What I took exception to was your statement that "Cal is automatically out of the running" once those other schools offer. How do you know that?

i don't know for a fact. I am just guessing or conjecturing. But when was the last time we got a recruit who chose Cal over offers from those other 3 schools?

Hard to put together a recruiting video when you have no post-season appearances to include. This year has to be the year to return to that. Charmin has even said so.

I too wish Cal had more momentum with recruiting like back around the Final Four run, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of regrouping and getting to another successful phase or "era"..it's not like Cal's never had some recruiting success/victories, including against the schools you mentioned...

In fact, didn't a poster on this board report that Oregon was after Ila Lane from the transfer portal, but she's joined Cal instead?

Dalayah Daniels chose Cal over Stanford and Oregon among others.

Michelle Onyiah chose Cal over Louisville, USC, and Arizona others.

McKenzie Forbes chose Cal over Louisville and Stanford and Oregon were also on her list of finalists.

Jaelyn Brown chose Cal over Louisville.

CJ West and actually MaAne' Mosley were both recruited by Stanford, though I am unsure if they were formally offered.

Kristine Anigwe chose Cal over Louisville and others.

It looks like next year there will be 7-8 openings with all of this year's seniors/5th year/grad students. Wonder what the makeup of the roster will look like? Mainly portal transfers?

I would think it HAS to be a majority of portal transfers. Charmin has stuck herself with a poor class balance and ~ if she wants to keep her job ~ can't "mostly" recruit true freshmen. In this day and age of NIL and portal transfers, no team should have to do a complete rebuild. Teams should be able to get experienced and good players. For example what Madsen has done with the MBB team this past portal season.

It seems to me -- barring complete indifference and incompetence from Jim Knowlton (which sadly, is par for the course as long as graduation rates are good) -- that Charmin has to win this year or she's gone.

If she does win, she can probably get some transfers. If she doesn't, why would anyone come to Cal? No atmosphere, no practice facility, no wins ...

I think you're right. For me she needs to either make the post season or have an incredible recruiting class coming in and I very much doubt the latter is possible. I like Charmin a lot and appreciate what she's done for the program but she might not be good enough to succeed in the Pac-12.

How many wins do you think would be sufficient? It seems to me that Charmin's teams have improved steadily but not quickly. I'd say the players coming in this season are as good as those who have left, possibly better, and they might fit together better.

I think our recruiting is doing fine with transfers and overseas players, not so much with domestic freshies. Cal does have its attractions with academics, prestige, diversity, location, weather, etc. which may count more to mature students. FWIW I arrived at Cal as immature as they come but those things were important to me.

Unfortunately, there simply aren't any positive performance numbers to point to over the past four years:

Highest League Finish = 10th
Total Winning Percentage = 36%
League Winning Percentage =16%
League Attendance Standing = 10th
Post-Season Appearances = 0

That doesn't mean it can't happen this year. Fingers crossed. But the question has to be posed: "If not now, when?".

Our OOC records have been fine the last two seasons.

I'd LOVE to see better attendance. But I was able to move my seats down two rows in the same section.

With a veteran team, and presumably a men's program on the rise, I would think a postseason berth in the new WNIT would be the minimum -- or least being in the running for such a berth heading into the Pac-12 tournament.

Which means having an OOC record enough above .500 to balance the Pac-12 below-.500 mark ...

Like almost everyone, I like and respect Charmin, and want her to succeed. But as in any job, sooner or later you have to deliver ...

The problem is there is now a thing called NCAA NET ranking that weights all wins and losses by a variety of factors. A home win against a weak team doesn't count for as much as a close loss to a strong team on the road. Last year, our season-end NET ranking was 82. Since some teams get an automatic entry into the NCAA tournament if they win a lesser league, we will likely need a NET ranking well inside #50 to make it In this year, and probably at least a 7th place finish in the PAC 12. In other words, we are going to have to win some meaningful games against strong teams both in and out of the conference.
