Makes sense. Coach is probably not the accurate job title. More like Administrator or Coordinator.

This is what SebastaBear had to say the other day in a BI Premium forum thread about saving Cal Athletics (A Plan to Save Cal Athletics Part 1: Money

"It is a widely known fact that the women's teams at Cal have not really done their share of fundraising. These teams have not been pressured in a way that was necessary and while baseball and rugby and men's aquatics have a lot of scrutiny on them and accordingly have devoted a lot of energy to cultivating donors the women's teams don't and haven't. They were protected by Title IX because of the compliance prong Cal has been using so they were never under any risk of disappearing. They were, of course, facing the risk of inadequate facilities and lack of fan attendance at their events, and that in and of itself should have been a reason to fundraise, but it didn't happen.

This was particularly brought home for me in running the collective. I have had many many conversations with Charmin Smith, who is very focused on NIL because of its importance in women's basketball. I know Stephanie Rivera has had several conversations with women's softball. But otherwise . . , ? Let's just say there hasn't been a a lot of responses from the coaches to my messages to them on the role NIL can play with their teams. I just get the impression most of them wouldn't even know where to start in trying to raise NIL funds from specific donors. It just hasn't been their world. That has to change."

Funny, I seem to recall that a very large donation from a female Cal donor that was supposed to go to women's softball stadium was redirected (by Sandy) to the Memorial re-do instead…I donate to athletics at both Cal and my undergraduate alma mater along with some to the D3 college my daughter attended (she didn't play sports but I like to support the programs). I'm not keen on the NIL though understand it's a fact of life. I'd rather donate to support expenses of the programs in general though…and will continue to do so.

Maybe it was true back in the Sandy day, but it's pretty easy now to designate which sport your money is going to.

That may all be true, but Field Hockey is the only women's sport that has an endowed coaching position, so there are been donors there obviously. Now, how that translates over to NIL is still the question (and maybe that's the point) but someone helping across sports might not only be helpful, but needed...

It is hard to believe the women's country clubs sports (tennis and golf) are not close to being fully endowed. Most elite schools that isn't problem. Heck, ex-Cal golfer Sophie Aagaard was able to get women's golf at Cal Poly SLO endowed before she took on the WSU head job.

mens tennis head coach is endowed. women no. many of their players are not from the US. i have sent my donations to both teams. Don't know why. they are not endowed.

The "not from the US" model is certainly working among Cal's most successful sports. Men's Water polo, Men's rowing, and Men's swimming have athletes who have had success on the international stage.
Women's hoop is next up with a ton of players from other countries, so that will be interesting to see...
