Lane Named To Lisa Leslie Award Preseason Watchlist - California Golden Bears Athletics (calbears.com)

Cal needs to run their offense through Ila Lane the majority of the time this season. Kristine Anigwe is the last formidable post player that the Bears have had during this downward spiral. GO BEARS!

Good for Ila!

I don't think we would get the best results running everything through the post, balance would be better. At the open practice Charmin said our shooters are good enough to keep opponents from double or triple teaming Ila.

With Coach Bryant now here, I hope we will stop telegraphing our passes into the post. I am surprised these have not been announced over the PA system as well: ""Advance warning, we are about to pass it into the post". Some passes back out to our shooters would also be most welcome.

Watching Lane, I'm not as excited as you are. She is not very fast. could hurt us defensively. The most important thing is we improve on our three point defense. I don't see her getting to the corner if we play two down below on a zone.

with Ila playing, cal would probably play a 2-3 matchup zone. she would control the center of the key. the guards would matchup on the opponents guards. weakside offensive player at wing or corner matched up by weakside 3 or 4 player. Ila on high post offensive player or if she slides to low post Ila still guards her from behind. That is what we ran at high school level to state championship. syracuse ran it at mens college level. 1-2-2 not good against teams that shoot well or have 3 shooters, which most power 5 teams do. That's why many teams play man to put constant pressure on the ball and next pass. Hopefully Charmin has much quicker players to defend the 3 pt shots that they have had trouble with in the past. watch the weakside rotations and see if Cal defenders get a hand up as the shooter is about to shoot, whether man or zone defense.

yes passing back out and back in would be very helpful. the double would probably come from the top or weakside , hopefully scouting will tell them that and Ila could pass to weakside open shooter. motion and backside screens would get her open in the paint. if she is a good shooter from the high post put her at high post and O at low post. Sorry i have not seen her shoot, so i will go look for video.

with Ila, most of her shots were inside the key. she would screen then post in the key and entry pass was easy. she can also shoot from the elbows and FT line. the announcers said she shoots well from there. she moves well enough to control the middle. she does slide well to wings and top of 3 pt line to defend. UC santa barbara played man defense. oponents pulled her out to defend high post and attacked from the wings and baseline keeping her from defending the basket. we will see how Charmin uses her on offense and defense. santa barbara played alot of pick and pop with their 3 pt shooters. also hawaii played alot of 5 out and 4 out motion allowing their guards to attack the basketball and also ran pick and pop with their 3 pt shooters as well. lots of movement, screens drives and kickouts. UC verses hawaii in far west finals. I would like to see Cal do more of that. hawaii won 60 to 59. She is a better player than the USF transfer IMHO.

Looking at the PAC12 coaches poll, which picks us for 11th despite changes in personnel, I presume that they think that they have Charmin's systems figured out and that these systems are beatable even with different players. Hopefully, Charmin will make some changes on the court in addition to the roster changes.

I think any system works with good enough players. That said, I prefer adapting the system to the players to trying to adapt the players to the system.

Lodebear, I assume you mean lat years USF recruit, Langarita, and no this year's recruit Krimili. I agree she is better than the USF big Woman. But the guard is pretty good.

yes wvitbear. post vs post. ila vs claudia. top 3 posts are ila, onyiah, and marta. top 4 guards are Mcintosh, martin, krimili and williams. big, quick, and good shooting guards are nice to have. only mcintosh and onyiah were recruited as freshman. the others are transfer portal. otherwise cal would be 12th by a longshot. i hope to see this team gell and play better as a team than their individual play. maybe move up to 8th verses 11th. Cal will have to use the transfer portal heavily again next year. they will need an experienced point guard and post.

I agree with you annarbor. if Charmin can get the players to play well together so they have good chemistry, then Cal will do better. she needs to get the team to play better defense against the 3 pt shooting and reduce the turnover errors. So yes the system has to change, but she does have better players. hard to project how the team will do with new players until they start playing.. So the safe choice is 11th. They could get to 8th.

Opponents will try to get Lane into a pick-and-roll, and generally P4 teams have more weapons than mid-majors so it will be harder for Lane to handle.

A classic 2-3 zone can definitely work but, as mentioned, the guards have to be committed and mobile -- and it helps if they are long. Mia Mastrov could be a good complement to Lane in a 2-3 zone, but she needs to make an occasional shot at the other end.

I've also heard that Lane is good at ducking into the lane when overplayed on the high post or strongside elbow. She appears to understand the game and thus maximizes her abilities.

McKayla is long. Lulu is very active and fast as is Krilili. (sp).

On offense, I am mostly hoping for better ball movement. Our "post-looking" slows everything down and also results in a lot of dribbling around outside while accomplishing nothing.
