The Cal women's basketball team is coming off its best season of the Charmin Smith era, but it doesn't have the preseason expectations to match from outside the program, at least.

The Bears made the postseason for the first time since 2019, eliminated in the second round of the WNIT, and ended up 19-15 overall only to be picked to finish 14th in the ACC in their debut in the conference.
Those in Berkeley believe that discredits the Bears' growth and the adjustments made through the transfer portal by Smith, who opens her sixth season as head coach on Monday against St. Mary's.

"Our expectations are higher than they were before last year," said senior Marta Suarez. "We had a good year, but it wasn't enough. We're very hungry, and we want to be in the NCAA Tournament."

The picture of Jayda practicing also shows Charmin and Leilani. Is Leilani working with the team? She was at the Vanguard game seated with the spectators.

Unfortunately at the Vanguard game we didn't see Kayla play long or Gisella play at all. Hope they're OK soon.

Mafua was spelled Magua. The Chronicle I know and love.

I guess we'll learn more about both of those items tomorrow afternoon at the open practice.

San Jose Mercury News had a piece on the Bears today. One thng I would disagree on is that they had Ackerman starting along with Williams, Krimili, Michele, and Marta. I think Lulu will start instead of Ackerman. Need her three point shooting.

My $.10 belief is that mature Marta and Michelle must show leadership-by-example. Both are capable of making the team exceed "expert" expectations. In 2024/25 Must take another step forward in defense, rebounding and finishing inside. Stay in the offense flow with smart shots and reduce turnovers.

Krimili is healthy and she looks outstanding. Defenses will close out Ioanna (and Lulu) until others step-up. Push the ball up the floor, and, again, take good shots in the flow. Go with the flow.

Out of nowhere I really like what I see in Abigor #33. Long, and athletic. Will be watching her growth. Cal appears deep in young raw talent this season. Could develop into something special vs. the tough ACC conference later. A lot of tests and growth opportunities coming after the opener against Saint Mary's.

Stay healthy.

Yes-Natalia Ackerman has two years of eligibility remaining if she wishes to utilize 'em. Her freshman season was 2020-21 (Covid) and she missed her entire soph season, 2021-22, due to injury. She has only player two full years of legit college basketball.
