The Auburn Tigers lost last night to the Oregon Ducks in Eugene, 70-68, in a battle of undefeated teams. This was the SEC team's first game away from home in Alabama. They had played a really soft schedule to put up some impressive stats while easily compiling a 3-0 record. Auburn had demolished those opponents while holding them to an average of 38 points per game.

I've decided to use the Oregon game as a more comparable game and opponent when comparing them to Cal.
I'm also not going to use last year's Bear victory over the Tigers in the deep South much in my analysis.

The two stars of Auburn this year are two transfers: SG (#0) Talia Scott, a 5-9 soph from the University of Arkansas, & PF (#5) DeYona Gaston, a 6-2 grad student from the University of Texas. Both are averaging more than 20 points per game and account for most of their team's offense. Their roster lists several tall post players, but they did not use them more than 10 minutes or so against Oregon. The Ducks outrebounded the Tigers by 10 boards.

Talia Scott was Arkansas's top scorer as a freshman, averaging 22.1 ppg! She has only played the last two games for Auburn but is putting up huge numbers. In her initial two encounters as an Auburn Tiger, she has gone off for 26 and 28 points, respectively. She drained 8 & 7 treys in those games. She basically is their three-point offense. Her shooting has been phenomenal in excess of 50% in each game.

Their impact post, DeYona Gaston, has backed her up with 21.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest. She got in early foul trouble in Eugene and only played 24 minutes, contributing 14 points plus three blocked shots. Both teams had only 11-13 assists while turning the ball over 19-20 times. Both Auburn & Oregon appear to have played formidable defense.

Auburn plays only five guards in their games. Talia Scott accounted for 28 of the Tiger's 68 points (or 41%)! If Cal could slow this sophomore dynamo down, they should be able to defend home court advantage. Oregon only made two three-point shots last night, so I don't know if it was caused by great defense or poor shooting. The Bears will certainly clarify that issue tomorrow night. I'm going to forecast a five-point victory, 72-67. Auburn's point guard, senior Mar'shaun Bostic (#12), had a bad night versus UO, committing 9 TOs. I believe that the outcome will be determined by the Bear's defense against their two starting guards. They both play nearly the entire game.

I anticipate that Auburn will come out with bigtime energy at 6:00 pm on Friday night. Two reasons-Cal embarrassed them on their home court last year and they want some payback, and Oregon forced them to experience their first loss of the 2024-25 season. Hopefully, Cal will prevail and remain undefeated.
GO BEARS!

Cal leads by ten at the end of the 1st quarter. It appears that Scott has re-injured her wrist. The post player Gaston is dominating inside.

At halftime, Bears only up by 3 points. Auburn is much more athletic and a step faster than Cal's players. The big players have to stop fouling and stay on the floor or the Bears will lose this game. All three bigs have two PFs each! Cal only has the three-point shot that they cannot get off with no inside threat to defend. Thirteen TOs means that the Bears are on track to duplicate their 26 against Grambling.

Bears have negligible height plus they lack scoring depth. When the reserves come in, Cal has great difficulty putting up points. Lola Donez even has difficulty shooting free throws (1-3).

Taliah Scott came back into the game late in the second quarter so will have to see how effective she will be.

Unable to view game on the ESPN app. It says I am not authorized to view this. Is it blacked out in Oakland?

I have it on my ESPN app, but it required that I also have an Infinity password.

Auburn has 11 O-boards. Cal has 1. Cal has 13 TOs. Many of those trying to force the ball inside.

If Cal corrects these, they will win.

Auburn has 10 more FGA...not a good thing.

Marta getting her second foul changed the game.

Our defense is good, but they are overmatching us athletically on our offensive end. Will have to find a way to move the ball better for three point opportunities, and, of course, cut the TO's. Marta back in will help a lot.

Halftime, 33-30 Bears. Auburn with an 11-1 run in the 2nd quarter to make it close. Nice to be leading, but gotta improve rebounding (Auburn's #5 is bouncy and active on offensive boards) below acceptable free throw percentage and lack of offensive flow. Too many times Lulu is wide open on the perimeter while offense goes one-on-one dribbling into turnovers or taking bad shots. Good news is this stuff is fixable. Still only November.

Oh, god, the rebound, or rather the lack of them. Lola looking good despite freshie errors.

Suarez is killing the Bear's offense. She is doing everything wrong. She has 5 TOs already. Cal has no movement in their offense. They are causing the PG to turnover the ball because she has nobody to pass to. Bears have come unglued and have turned over the ball 12 more times in the third period. Auburn has held Cal to 10 & 12 points in the last two quarters. The Tigers are in control.

Cal showed lots of heart in the fourth quarter and finished on a 12-4 run to emerge victorious. Bears beat the Tigers despite committing 29 turnovers. What is the Cal record? Anyway, the Bears are still undefeated (6-0) until they face Michigan State (6-0) next Tuesday in Palm Springs. GO BEARS!

Suarez needs to stop thinking she is a PG. Her unforced turnovers are bizarre and brutal.

Excuse my french but the number of Cal turnovers are not the result of pressure defense, they are of the pull your head out variety.

auburn taking away the 3 and so we try to drive, but auburn defense is scrappy and stealing the ball with the double. ... will we keep doing that over and over???

Charmin justifiably lit up the team on the quarter break for all the careless turnovers but it hasn't gotten much better in the 4th.

Gotta factor in the risk-reward in so many of those passes and have to take care of the ball, especially when you've got speedy defenders on you.

This is where Leilani could've helped.

Pretty decent crowd, especially for a rainy Friday night with an early start time. Good crowd noise and energy, too. They really want this one for the team.

I wasn't sure about Lulu when she came to Cal as an under the radar player, but she showed a lot in her freshmen season and this season she is a verified star

She played against a lot of tough international competition so even though she wasn't a flashy signee, she put up some big games against a lot of older players. She has been a pleasant surprise so far this season, though.

That was a terrible call taking Lulu's bucket off the board. The defender's foot was clearly still sliding. Could've put them up 5 with an and-1.

I'm so jazzed about the win that I'm not going to go on rant about turnovers especially as regards to a certain Spanish player. Twenty-five in the first three quarters but thankfully down to four in the fourth. Auburn is a terrific defensive team but with no outside shooting, They hit only one three. Very impressed with how the Bears closed out the game, especially their defense. Lulu has transformed since last season and she's Ms. Clutch.. The game was worth the walk home in the rain.
