We shot only 26.7% in the final quarter with only one assist, so our offense basically disappeared, and we also got out-rebounded 13-8. The traditional Michelle foul-out is always a killer.

Not having Noble on the defensive end really hurt. Hope that she is not out for any length of time.

The Bears sloppy high turnovers, lazy passes all season have caught up with them. Suarez is super but are the coaching staff telling her not to try to be a point guard? Willians turns over the ball also. Onyiah reverted bk to fouling out when she's badly needed since there is a big dropoff with Abigor replacing her. The Bears cannot afford to not make all their foul shots. Twisdale continues to be one of the best players.

I'm about as positive as they come but.... that was one of the most disappointing and just straight up embarrassing collapses i've seen as a Golden Bear fan. You're up by 18 deep into the 3rd and you just stop playing.

Where was the strategy? Where was the leadership? Where was the fight? Where was the bench play? Give your talented bench some minutes!

Congrats Spartans. You earned this one!
This. We look poorly coached.
You're saying Jim shouldn't have handed Charmin an inexplicable three year extension after making the prestigious WNIT?
I really like Charmin as a person and hope she will be successful. But she is not a good coach in my opinion. I was optimistic with this latest recruiting class but it seems to be more of the same. Knowlton is a whole other thing.

When you combine MSU's style of play at maximum intensity with the refs not calling much of anything, they are hard to beat.

Someone explain the T on Ioanna please?

Big scrum that often happens with these types of loose balls

If anything I think more fouls should be called when players just crash the pile

Can't commit 20 turnovers against quality teams and Charmin's teams have always had issues with turnovers. That press in the 4Q had Cal confused and completely interrupted its offense. Bears didn't get any quality shots down the stretch. Also, the officiating was favored toward MSU, it was more physical and attacked the paint and the officials gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Cal needs a point guard and Suarez can't keep being a turnover machine. She has 12 in the past two games. I would also like to see Charmin fight for her team and fight for calls. She doesn't get animated at all on the sideline and just watched her team blow an 18-point lead. They've got to improve before ACC play.

Anyone at the last game can tell you Charmin gets plenty animated. Shr really lit them up going into the 4th quarter vs Auburn.

On a brighter note, two freshmen (Donez and Abigor) got significant minutes in a tight battle. Should help as the season progresses.

Uncharacteristically, Abigor missed two free throws on her only attempts.

I agree about missing Jayda Noble and her defense.

Abigor is a bright spot and will get tons of PT as an athletic, long center

Impressed with this rookie

Our starting PG can't have as many unforced turnovers (and also not being to reliably hit FTs)

She needs to be the best with ball security and be able to close out teams at the line.

Marta is the least of our problems

On a positive note, this is Charmin's best team

Game really went downhill when Michele fouled out. We really could have used Jayda in this one, and lots of little things went against us down the stretch.

Amazing how when beat Gonzaga, held the big lead, and nobody wanted to give Charmin much credit. But now here we go again with many posters slamming on her. When we gave up the lead to Auburn but came back to win not a whole lot of Charmin credit talk. No coach is perfect. She's doing a good job and has recruited good players, I wish we could just move on from all of the criticism.

This ^ 100% agree. On to the next, hopefully with a healthy squad.

I see the warning signs of what's to come. Charmin has done well recently in non-con play. But these are repeatable issues from her teams

I'll give her credit for coaching the team to an undefeated record up until today. But I believe she is like Wilcox. She may win slightly more than 50% of the games eventually, but that is the ceiling. She is however many years into her tenure and we still haven't been to the tourney under her. Her teams turn the ball over WAY too much, a sure fire sign of ineffective coaching.

The players seem to like her and she can recruit OK. But I don't think we will ever be a top 25 team under her and I believe that is what we should strive to be.

What we really need now is a bounce-back game tomorrow against Arizona.

I would normally agree about the refs. But MSU clearly tries to play as aggressively as the refs will let them get away with. And that increased in the fourth quarter. We had 24 fouls and they had 19. That just doesn't pass the eye test in this one.
Shocky1

^ this is just paranoid delusional excuse making that is epidemic on this board

in past seasons this board has complained that the pac 12 refs call too many ticks tac tight calls with minimal contact, now this board is complaining that the refs are letting too much physical play

you hit the nail on the head: "But MSU clearly tries to play as aggressively as the refs will let them get away with"
...that's just GREAT COACHING!!

let's be real here, winning programs ADAPT to the refs, the reality is that this program is not particularly adaptive at this time

curious about the mindset of the "we're getting screwed" crowd, do you really think the refs have an agenda against the cal women's basketball program?...do you think there's sports book betting this is causing them to get paid off?

a better head coach would've protected michelle by sending another defender at the ball when onyiah got posted up down low...it's more important to try to dig the ball out or force a quick pass out than allow michelle to get banged upon which often results in michelle banging back & getting a foul

and the # of turnovers is also a function of coaching & recruiting all of which are under the purview of the head coach

tomorrow will be a great chance of bounce back game against a less talented opponent, the big question is how much gas in the tank will lulu & marta have in the tank after playing 37 minutes?...and yeah the playing minutes distributions are also a function of coaching

What a shame to let this game slip away with sloppy passes and forced shots. They had it won. The 5th foul on Michele was ridiculous and should have been a charge. Probably decided the game. Saurez adds so much, but when she dribbles more than twice, I wince and wait for the turnover.

There's an easy solution to what is perceived as shaky officiating: Play better.

If you play well enough, the officials don't matter.

It happens in college basketball. Even in the NBA. Ask the Warriors. Coach Kerr says, "no lead is safe".
